Monterey, CA? Housing? Etc?

So it looks like I'll be relocating to the Monterey, CA area in the VERY near future. Couple of questions:
1. Housing. Anyone know any leads on any not super-expensive apartments in the area? Or maybe someone looking for a mellow, low-key, bike industry roommate with 2 indoor cats? Just need my own bathroom, and room for 5-8 bikes...Is there an area to stay away from, or a super-cool part of town? I'd like to be close enough to commute by bike, I really don't want to have to drive to work, so within about 10 miles or so.
2. Bars. I've only been up there for Sea Otter, and obviously had other things going on, but what is the social scene like up there? I had a really great, mellow, cozy local bar in Santa Barbara, looking for something similar.
3. Riding. Yeah, I already know it's a ton better than where I'm at, so no real questions here...:)
4. Riding buddys. Anyone is welcome to offer to show this newbie some good trails/road rides...I've been off of the bike for a little while, knee injury and some other factors, but I intend to return with a vengence.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks,

JJames

I call dibs on a floor spot for sea otter :)
I see you're setting your standards high. I would have asked for dibs on the couch, not the floor. Then again you're only 15 1/2 so you don't really know any better. :nope: :eviltongu

They have a nice aquarium.

Also I have NEVER seen so many high end cars driving around in one town before in my life!!!

Monterey itself is a little expensive. Salinas will be more affordable. I had a friend who lived in Prunedale, a little North. I'm not sure if he's still there or not. So that job looks promising? Good luck bro! If you need any maps for the area lemme know ;)

The aquarium there rocks. Although I can't imagine the cost of living down there...

So if we provide beer, we get a place to stay for Sea Otter? ;)

Look in Seaside or Sand City. Both are only a few miles from Monterey and connected by bike paths for the most part. Those areas can be ghetto but they can also be nice you just have to look around. I lived at Fort Ord as a wee lad and I liked the area. Fort Ord is now CSU Monterey Bay so there should be nice college oriented night life to tap into. I forgot the name of the bar but there's a cool underground (literally) place downtown that we went to at Sea Otter this year.

Veltec or what? :)

I think I'm gonna stay away from Salinas, just because it'd be a bit of a drive, and I'm pretty adamant about being able to ride my bike to work, and not drive, so we'll see.
I will be working in Sand City Sean, so you decide. But yeah, I've found some ok places online, I might just try to find a place with a 6 month lease or something, as I may have a buddy moving out early in '06, so then we'd find a place obviously.
Seaside and Sand City were both high on the list of places to look.

Tenchiro, yeah, we'll cross the whole "beer for floorspace" issue once I get there, and SO gets a little closer, but I'm sure something could be arranged.

Noah- Yeah, I'm stoked, I'll give you a call tonight to catch up and stuff, fill you in on the nitty gritty.

Stosh- I'm all about the aquarium. First order of business is a year pass, I'm gonna be there every day. When I'm not riding that is.

I've been trying to keep employers, etc, a little more private these days. Been a while since "J@G" I suppose, and besides, this one doesn't have too much to do directly with the end users, so no real need.
Gimme a call or something and we can discuss. I still need to get up to SB to hang. My best friend from HS in NY is moving out to Ventura (!) at the end of the month, so I will be back down in the SB/VTA area a crapload, so lots of opportunities to be down there.
Think I may have found a decent place in Marina, looking into that...
