This just happened down the hill from me this morning. A friend of a coworker is in ICU right now after catching a bullet in the arm which also severed an artery. His wife and friend of these guys works in the hospital in reno and is sending updates as she gets them.

At least three of the victims listed as National Guard were army snipers just returned from multiple tours in Afganistan and Iraq. Friends eating breakfast.

“I had my pistol, but I wasn’t going to go up against an automatic rifle,” Ralph Swagler said.
This redneck gun shlt seriously needs to stop.

I'm really sorry about your coworker's friend, Kevin.
Thanks man. It sounds like he's going to be all right life-wise, his arm sounds like another story possibly. Two friends at the table with him dead though. I found out about this morning when my coworker got a call from his wife at the hospital.

Two tours in afganistan and a sniper to boot.........and now this shlt.
Unfvckingbelievable.

'Round these parts two new gun stores opened up specializing in custom high end semi automatic rifles. This is a town with very low crime rates short of rednecks shooting family members. The demand for such businesses can only be bad news in my opinion.

The shooter used an ak-47, one of the cheapest semi automatic rifles.

One thing I have noticed with most crazies is that they can't hold a job which can afford them a Bushmaster AR-15 with a C-More Red Dot sight.

Funny how someone crazy enough to slaughter people are not on time workers.

Sad to say but there will be a time (surprised it hasn't happened already) when a well outfitted and well trained veteran will finally snap and create some real damage before being killed all over the TV.

The good thing about these redneck inbred types that go out in a blaze of glory is they really don't have any skill with a firearm and aren't to hip on mag changes.

the really unfortunate part about this (other than the innocent lives lost) is the community will blame it on firearms and not the retard behind the trigger.

The question is can you legislate human control? Ban all semi-automatic rifles which shoot a round larger than .22? It is possible, if this wasn't America.

Psychological checks at the gun shop?

My suggestion has been putting a $1000 tax on any "assault" rifles under $1000 in price.

Of course, the NRA won't be offering any solutions.

I bet he'd use a bell tower!
too original and vulnerable,

today's vets are allot smarter than those of yesteryear.

due to the nature of current combat tactics I would be willing to bet some wacko will use an industrial urban choke point in CQB stronghold fashion, IE: subway, train station, sporting venue, or possibly a shopping mall if sturdy enough. the wacko will either be heavily fortified or be very mobile and have a substantial amount of ammunition and most likely be using a magazine fed assault rifle in 7.62 or better with optics and possibly night vision capabilities.

myself and others were asked to give insight on this topic to certain officials recently.

The crazy thing is that people feel they need weapons to protect themselves from the government. Don't they watch the Military Channel at all?

its all relative really,

more peeps are killed by cars than anything else, DMV sure doesn't do a decent job from preventing these fatalities....
I know we can play this game for a while. I would come back with how ever driver and vehicle is licensed and insured, statistics are kept from tire wear to deaths due to bad weather, and how every state dedicates thousands of officers to traffic enforcement.

Really, the question I have is this something that is simply a random occurrence, and if not, is there legislation which could help to minimize or prevent it?

I don't have the answer, but this one is getting closer to home.

BTW, I read this article about preventing Vets from going postal: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/18/us/18vets.html

Staff Sgt. Brad Eifert circled through the woods behind his house here, holding a .45-caliber pistol. The police were out there somewhere and, one way or the other, he was ready to die.

He raised the gun to his head and then lowered it. Then he fired nine rounds.

“They’re going to take me down, they’re going to finish me off, so,” he remembers thinking, “finish me off.”

Leaving his weapon, he ran into the driveway, shouting, “Shoot me! Shoot me! Shoot me!” The police officers subdued him with a Taser and arrested him. A few hours later, he sat in a cell at the Ingham County Jail, charged with five counts of assault with intent to murder the officers, each carrying a potential life sentence.

In daring the police to kill him, Mr. Eifert, who had served in Iraq and was working as an Army recruiter, joined an increasing number of deployed veterans who, after returning home, plunge into a downward spiral, propelled by post-traumatic stress disorder or other emotional problems.

Their descent is chronicled in suicide attempts or destructive actions that bring them into conflict with the law — drunken driving, bar fights, domestic violence and, in extreme instances, armed confrontations with the police of the kind that are known as “suicide by cop.”

Such stories often end in death or prison, the veteran in either case lost to the abyss.

But something different happened in Mr. Eifert’s case. Headed for disaster, he was spared through a novel court program and an unusual coming together of a group of individuals — including a compassionate judge, a flexible prosecutor, a tenacious lawyer and an amenable police officer — who made exceptions and negotiated compromises to help him.

If he takes advantage of the chance to recover his life, he is likely to avoid incarceration and receive the care he needs to move forward.

I watched a police dash cam video they now use for training of a gas station shoot out where one dude with light armor and a sh!t ton of ammo used urban tactics to beat the piss out of a dozen cops. They talked about his use of cover, his stance, his movement, all learned and tested in combat. Only this time his "enemy" was well under powered.

But this guy at IHOP wasn't prior service from what I could tell.
