Hi everyone,

So, I'm planning on building up an Imperial this summer and I want to be sure I understand the relationship between BB, Chainrings, bashguard and cranks. I've already posted questions on this topic before, but since I'm not very mechanically inclined I thought I'd ask this:

Based on previous recommendations, I'm seriously thinking about the FSA Platinum Pro BB (118mm to account for wider tires as per Evil website). Now, I want to run an e.13 38 tooth chainring and SRS so I guess that means that I shouldn't purchase a new crank/chainring combo because I won't need those chainrings. I should only buy crank arms. If that's the case, are the FSA X-drive or Pounder models any good and will the e.13 chainring fit etc...I looked at the FSA website and I don't quite understand the description:

"Crankarms made using 35mm diameter tubular 4130 chromoly 7075/T6 spider – 104/64mm or 110/74mm bolt circle diameter Crank lengths include – 165mm, 170mm, 175mm Chromoly chainring bolts Spindle is 19mm (3/4”) by 48 tooth spline Four cartridge sealed bearings Adjustable Chainline Crankarm set weight – 1242 grams (4 bolt, inc. spider)"

What do they mean by 104/64mm or 110/74mm and the chainring bolts spindle? Are these important numbers to consider? I mean the e.13 chainring will be 4x104 so how should these other numbers impact my decision?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Matt

The 104/64mm or 110/74mm numbers are chainring bolt pattern designations. Older stuff ran the 110/74, the large and middle chainrings would fit the 110mm pattern, while the small ring will fit the 74mm. Newer stuff, in an effort to run smaller chainrings are usually the 104/64mm configuration.

If your going all new, it shouldn't matter. Just make sure you order the correct chainring to fit whichever crank you decide on. I'm sure e.13 makes rings and bashguards to fit both.

What that means is:

-Crank Lengths include - 165mm, 170mm, 175mm
-Chromoly Chainring bolts
-Spindle is 19mm (3/4") by 48 tooth spline
...etc....

What THAT means is that the X-drive uses a 48t spline bottom bracket spindle. It is NOT ISIS. X-drives come with said bottom bracket though, so you need not fear. This style of BB is commonly called "Profile-style" b/c Profile is probably the most recognizable maker of this type of cranks.

If you need ISIS to go with the Platinum Pro BB, get the Pounders.

Frankly, if you're not mechanically inclined, you should stick with the Pounders. Profile-style cranks are kinda tricky to set up if you don't know what you're doing.

Evil makes chainrings and bashguards in both 104mm (4-bolt) and 110mm (5-bolt), that's no problem.

Just to be thorough. There are two 5-bolt patterns (ignoring all the road and track sizes):

110/74 and 94/58

and at least one 4-bolt pattern:

104/64.

There's lots and lots of gear in most every size, and Evil makes bashguards in all 3 patterns.

The only difference that may matters is that, each pattern has a different 'largest ring'. For example, I think 110/74 can fit maybe 32 on the 110 bolts (outer/middle ring) and 24 (22?) on the 74 bolts (inner ring). 94/58 can got to 29 and 20, I think....
