So I've mentioned ITAR paranoia before right? And we lowly canadians are heavily controlled by the good ol' boys down in Fort Worth.

so anyway with the addition of the Venezuela and Lebanon to "the list"...of the axis of evil or whatever it is, a couple of guys here are now no longer allowed to be in our office area without an escort. They actually had to have their desks moved out to a different area of the building

Even though they are canadian citizens, working IN CANADA, they are second class citizens here. One guy was born in Lebanon, but moved here before he was 2 years old.

At what point does this start being blatant discrimination?

Hmm...
The first thing I thought was, that'd be a pretty chill job to be an escort for two people who you know arent going to do anything. Just sit there and look serious or something. Cake.

We were trying to hire a Chinese postdoc and one of the higher-ups denied his visa (although he's already a student at another American university). Not sure why the denied it. They don't even have to tell us why. It's a pain because we already spent money flying him here for a interview and have waited months to get approval. Not to mention that we all really liked the guy and his credentials. So much for the advancement of American sciences.

There can only be advancement if it's kept in this country...and obviously a Chinese person would run and tell Mao at the earliest opportunity....

Wait....what??!!? Mao's dead!??!?? NoooooooooO!!!!!

So as luck would have it, I was invited to one of those B.S. "lunch with President of the company" things where they make it look like the company give a flying **** about you. It was today. Well lo and behold, guess who else was there! Our Lebanese freedom hater!

The format was that we we each allowed one question or comment (there were about 15 of us). This guy asked about the ITAR thing.

It was explained thusly:

The president likened it to a blind person applying for a job as a bus driver. Technically NOT hiring the blind person is discrimination, but there are minimum requirements for the position. And in our field/company, one of the minimum requirements is compliance with ITAR. The company is working VIGOROUSLY to have these individuals approved by the US dept of Justice ASAP so that they may return to the regular workforce. But until such time, tough bananas for you.

Perhaps re-educate them....as falafel shop workers say.....
I've heared your 7elevens are so full of Arabs they might aswell turn it into a kebab chain. Is that true?

The (ex(hopefully))Coke head vietnam-dodging druken (ex)cheerleader in the whitehouse is already trying that down in cuba.
So because Chavez called the coke head a drunk and a donkey, Venezuela is now a member of the dreadfull axis?

But Lebanon? Doesn't dubya make a distinktion between Hizbollah members and all the other Lebanese minorities? He doesn't even take consideration that their president (or prime minister) Signora is an Americano file..

This "president of the company" character sounds like a complete retard for even trying to liken blatant discrimination to anything other than blatant discrimination.....

Eh....if there is a large Arab population in the area chances are that the local 7-11's will be run by them....Same goes for any recent immigrants from any other countries that are in the area....

Hilarious that newly arrived immigrants from other countries can run successful businesses, meanwhile a large percentage of fat, lazy americans sit on their collective asses and collect welfare.

It' not "the president's" call though. It's all US gov't paranoia leaking over the border.
Yeah...I know....I wasn't saying he's at fault. I was simply stating that trying to call the situation something it's not, is bad, mmmm-kay....

What I've learned today:

  • People are fvcked up racists. No really!
  • The movie ISHTAR is being used somehow to discriminate people in the Canadian workforce.
  • MMike not only fvcks horses, but he's a gigolo for terrorists.
  • The company MMike works for has a vigorous blind president.

Ok, cool.

Kool. I still find Apoo of the Simpson's the closest interpretation to date though....and the funniest.
Yeh, Simpsons images our societies pretty well. I don't watch it regularly though so I had to search what "Apoo" was and I found this after a while:
I love black humor... The most under rated movie ever must have been Harlem Nights.

 9/11 pt. 2!
Waaa, where the hell did you find that quote?

So this just came up again. The company had done a blanket application to the USDOJ to get these employees here cleared to move freely about society. It came back: DENIED

Good day:
Yesterday afternoon, I met with several members of our
Senior Management Team and some twenty employees who
either have dual citizenships and/or were born in proscribed
countries as defined in Part 126.1 of ITAR (International
Traffic in Arms Regulations).

I had to announce to all of these members of our personnel,
who are also solid performers with valued positions within our
company, that our application to obtain an exception to the
provisions of Part 126.1 had unfortunately been officially
disapproved by the United States Department of State. As a
result, the accommodations which are already in effect
(access restriction, for example) for these employees will be
maintained.
So these ne'erdowells (aka canadian citizens) will continue to be herded in the corner, and require escorts though the office.
