WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is considering whether or not to make public graphic videos and photographs of abuse of Iraqi prisoners, the Pentagon said on Monday.
"We haven't ruled it (release) in or out," Defense Department spokesman Lawrence Di Rita told reporters. Photographs of the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by the U.S. military were first broadcast by CBS, but additional photographs and videos have not been made public by the Defense Department.
A Defense Department official, who asked not to be identified, said President Bush had been shown photographs of the abuse during a visit to the Pentagon on Monday

I’m torn on this issue. First thing is this has to investigated thoroughly, independently and the results released to the public. Not sure what releasing more photos will achieve - would DoD releasing the photos be a good step forward in showing their commitment to pursue this issue? Perhaps. Arguably releasing more photos would only provide more fodder for Al Queda recruiting and more shallow media buzz – (see Pseudo Journalism thread). Does DoD know what’s best for us?
To date, the Department of Defense has not inspired confidence in their dealings on this issue. Throw in election year politics ay carumba.

The photos and videos are not a good thing but as a free society I think we are obligated to release them. I think time will prove that this type of treatment was systematic and wide spread - the reports seem to becoming from reliable sources - I don't think the International Red Cross is known for stretching and / or withholding the truth.

The issue is out there and the world is discussing it, to release more pictures will only do harm!

Especially if what has been rumored to be in those pictures and video is true...
