F-in scum just stole my Foes FXR and a friends custom extra large Foes Mono that were both locked inside a locked bike/ski cage in a locked underground parking lot in the middle of the friggin day. They left my Mono that was locked with a Kryptonite New York lock though. And this is 3 weeks after another friends Bullit was stolen from the same garage.

Most of the condos/hotels have a 'no bikes inside' rule that I was just told to ignore and FWIW, i would suggest anybode else do the same thing.

Nice way to ruin my friends trip - no way he can even rent a bike that fits him.

Damn that's fu<king lame man!!! What hotel did you stay in so the rest of us can rent a room from a better serviced hotel. I'd be speaking with management, it's probably an inside job as most of the hotels, rest., etc are employeed by poor riders like most of us only they have access to the lockers. Another thing too is that the Crankworkx thing was going on so anybody(Thief/criminal) with a type of sense who lives in the local vacinity was probably at the festival on all the days as theres tons of 5k plus bikes just chillin'...

Sorry to hear that Sh1t man, I'd be shifting the responsibility onto the hotel and seeing what they can do for you.

Last week my buddy had his wifes brand new Big Hit and his new Kona stolen off the back of his truck in the middle of the day in Whistler. He had two bike locks on them and the cables were cut and laying on the ground.

Someone needs to set up a sting operatioin and catch these mofos.

When I was in Whistler a couple weeks ago, they told me I had to keep my bike in the storage area (which, of course, I didn't do). I went down there to check it out, and my bike would have been, save a Planet X hardtail, the only bike worth more than about $400. Talk about an obvious targtet for thieves! However, I did feel safe when I stayed at the Pan Pacific one time, because they actually had a bike valet who made you show him the ticket to pick up your bike, and an indoor storage area.

We were staying in the Powderhorn condos. They're up the hill a little behind the Chateau Whistler on the Blackcomb side. They provide the lockup and have signs posted all over that bikes are 'prohibited' inside the condos. That may be our out and we're going to contact a local Whistler lawyer tomorrow to see if the management company can be held responsible.

Russ that fvcking sucks bro. i say good call on getting a lawyer. i don't normally condon lawsuits, but in a case like this i'm all for it. since they don't let YOU keep a close eye on your bike, i think THEY ought to be responsible for it. let us know how it turns out.

i bought a kryptonite new york chain two weeks ago. i recommend it to everyone on this board. for a long time i was like, **** that, those things are too expensive. then i realized it was $75 for the lock to keep the bikes i spent thousands on safe. i really hate having to lock up my bikes, i hate locking my doors, my car, anything. i hate locks in general. they don't make me feel safe, they make me worry about my stuff. but even more, i hate the people who make locks necessary.  :mumble: :mumble:

The local theives have keys to all of those areas unfortunately. The hotels are partially responsible, when their employees "lose" a key they just make another one. It's not that much work to only use keys that are marked "do not copy" so locksmiths won't copy them and then if an employee loses a key to replace or rekey the locks.

Towing the party line.
Whistler has had an epidemic of bike thefts lately. You will not win the lawsuit most probably, unfortunately. I know a few people who have tried and basically got laughed out of court. BUT they did get a settlement from the hotel they were at, basically to avoid having to admit guilt i guess.

crashing is right, the thefts that occur in hotel ski lockers aren't any work at all...the theives have keys and are in and out in a minute.

That is really crappy. May I suggest that you compose a letter to the local newspaper detailing your misfortune? Mention the circumstances, name the condo and demand restitution. I've heard of this type of thing happening at a few of the smaller properties. The only way the property managers will bother to spend $$ to beef up their security is when it hits their bottom line.

I wouldn't count on it--every hotel that I've ever been in says that they aren't responsible for lost or stolen goods.

Best idea yet! I think EVERYONE who has had their bike stolen at whistler should contact the local media. Make sure to mention if you notified the police... if they start to look bad in the local paper or on TV, then maybe they'll put down the donuts and start doing something. Find out if some local station has an "investigative reporter" and talk to them. They love it when they can expose failures at Hotels and within the Police, it really boost their ratings.

One last thought - write the mayor/city council/ local tourism board/ Whistler and let them know what is happening. Let’s face it, if this keeps up they are going to start to loose business (well theoretically...) since people may not risk loosing their bikes just to ride Whistler.

Just my $0.02

That bl0ws. As much as it sucks that your bud's Foes was difficult to get (it being a custom size and all), it'll make it easier to identify so that you can bludgeon it's new rider.

Keep an eye out on ebay and the pinkbike and nsmb classifieds as well.

That is terrible!

I would at least look into the legal aspect of the hotel effectively "forcing" you to store your bikes in their "inadequate" facility by not allowing you store them safely in the room. I doubt if it will work but sometimes a threatening call from a good lawyer can do the trick.

How hard would it be to plant a tracking device on a bike? Canada has effectively employed "bait cars" to catch car thieves. With bikes costing as much as many used cars, why not do the same thing? Especially in a place where high-end bike theft is at epidemic proportions!

For anyone looking to stay in Whistler...
I recommend staying at "Northstar at Stoney Creek" They have great condos in the village and they ALLOW BIKES IN THE ROOM!!! The 2br/2ba unit with a full kitchen and washer/dryer goes for about $100US per night (When booked through "Whistler Premiere Accommodations"). Also don't forget to get your GST tax (7%) credited back on not only your hotel but all purchases (goods only, not services or food) over $50CAN. I recouped over $60 and would have gotten over $80 if I had done it at the border instead of at the hotel (damn service charge)...

Bike thieves burn in hell!!!!!!!

Those fvckin' twerps man! I could beat them all the way back to wherever the he11 they came from. That is total BS, people taking your stuff that isn't theirs.

Anyway, don't forget to check the mtbr.com classifieds as well! What color/build/size is your bike? I'll keep an eye out on the ebay ads, since I've been selling and buying (swapping out) some parts to get the bikes setup for the east coast terrain.

BTW, someone needs to setup a sting operation up in Whistler to scoop up those scumbags and let them rot in jail.

I don't know that writing the local paper will help any. Most people around here know about their terrible theft rate. In fact, one time while I was crossing the border bringing my motorcycle and two mountain bikes the border guard told me to keep everything locked up really tight as Whistler has the highest theft rate in Canada.

this is one reason I didn't end up going to whistler this year. The more and more I read about bicycle thefts to less and less I want to take my chances. Man that sucks to have your stuff stolen when on a trip (or stolen period).

You'd think with the money involved in the MTB park and the clients bringing their stuff there the local law enforcement would do something. As far as DH bikes go they cost about as much as used cars, so it could be similar to car theft. They'd be all over that, but bicycles I think are taken a different way.

I wanna say the odds of it all being 'inside' of a job is probably high. Like someone said earlier, they don't make new keys, they just make more of the same one if one is lost. That is pretty lame but they are cheap hotels. The hotels I guess don't think they are loosing money by this. It's just a matter of time until either the crime drops or people stop going. All it takes is once to get your stuff stolen and that's it, never again there!

Worst off, you spend $100+ on some fancy lock to find out that your bike is stripped. It's like you'd need your own personal assitant to watch it for you.

we ALWAYS keep the bikes in our condo when we go to Whistler, I don't give a rats arse what the rules are. You would think that a place like Whistler that has so much time and $$$ invested in their bike park would be doing more to prevent this type of thing....they need to setup Vegas style security monitoring on that chit.

I rarely spend the night at whistler, if I do my bike is locked in a room to something in the room.

I keep my bike in sight or I am touching it when I am there. If I go out to eat at the end of the day I ride my bike to where I am eating instead of locked in the truck and I sit where I can see my bike.

I am paraniod, but I still have my bike!

Unless the park management and various proprietors up there hear of this and riding public’s displeasure, nothing will be done. If they hear about how bikers are taking their dollars elsewhere because of the theft problems, they may be willing to do something.

So, email and call them. Let them know that you may start rethinking your Whistler plans, unless they start addressing this. :nope:

When I was up there, my bike never left my side. I stayed at a nice B&B in Kits that said I wasn't supposed to keep the bike in my room. They had a locked building w/security lights and alarm on the fenced property they said I could keep it in but I refused. We compromised by me agreeing to keep the bike in it's travel case in my room. Of course, once it was assembled, it remained so in my room for the 9 days of my stay less time spent at Whistler.

Park management and propretors don't have to hear it from anyone, they know. The Park has had it's own rental fleet ripped off a few times this year. The properties might be persuaded to have better security (ie. video cameras or at least a ticket/valet type system like the Pan Pacific) if letters written to the local paper were to be published in great enough numbers. If you can convince enough people that one property is much better equiped to accomodate bikers the other properties might figure they're loosing business.

I know in Europe hotels advertise in their front windows "Bikers Welcome". which means they have secure storage and they usually tools, air, and bike stands available as well.

I stayed at the Gonzo Inn in Moab last October. They had a locked room that you had to show your pass and have a member of the hotel staff open for you. That was a pleasant first! (Usually we camp and lock our stuff to a nearby tree)
