I still think the overall tact of the gay rights movement is off on the marriage issue. The goal shouldn't be to push for state's to recognize the legitimacy of marriage between gays. The goal should be to strike the religious term "marriage" from government use. It should be an issue of separation of church and state issue, plus reduction of government power. The big benefit to the gay rights movement is, if the government can ONLY grant civil unions, the whole debate about the sanctity or definition of marriage is removed, and bigots are forced to argue fully exposed as bigots.
It's finally bringing the Mormon church up to the 20th century. "You can't kick someone out of their home for being gay." Wow, real progressive there, UT.

Civil Unions = what's needed for governmental benefits (taxes, inheritance, legal protection, etc).
Marriage = what your church/synagogue/etc does for you.

Don't forget there are gay jesus freaks too. Out in the open gay I mean, not just "kill all gays except for my secret boyfriend who may ruin my preisthood" gay.
Plus a really significant number that are hung up on the word just as much as the straight jesus freaks. I have no idea why.
But I do agree with you. Shooting the cause in the foot with a semantic bullet.
