I saw this mentioned in a PBS documentary on Appalachia a while back. It is really significant in just visual damage alone, much less the effects on the streams.

So much for "clean coal".

It is the absolute biggest ecological tragedy of our day. (I guess maybe taking down the rainforests and building dams are right up there too)
Visually, yes, it's disturbing and the impacts on streams and wildlife and people are huge...people just don't realize it.

You know what they do with all the material they bulldoze of the top of the mountains? The only thing you can do with it... fill up valleys.

Oh, but according to the coal companies...

Once you knock down a mountain... it is gone. Forever.

Give me a nuclear plant any day of the week over a coal fired one.

Clean coal = hybrid hummer

With all this news recently of coal miners dying, oil spills destroying ecosystems (and the workers there dying too) it has made me realize that I have yet to hear of a solar panel or wind turbine killing anyone.

Wind turbines kill stupid birds and bats. I'm a bit of a tree hugger but it pisses me off when wacko ****s try to block things like wind farms for that reason. Everything we do is going to have an environmental impact but blocking all progress is so much worse than settling for better alternatives.

Really?
Research done on wind farms in NZ has yet to find a single dead bird from wind turbine impact.
These birds are smart and great flyers but the wind is not stable around there. Got burned playing around. Shortened version:
