So aside from the lack of readily availible high gravity Adult beverages..

Any one got information on the southwestern Utah scene?

DH, XC whatever?
Local housing, jobs, resteraunts, etc?

Looks like I'm moving to Cedar City, Utah come August.

Go-Ride.com is in Utah - Salt Lake City I believe - so there has to be some decent DH stuff going on in that state.

What causes the move? Work?

Utah sucks... talk about urban sprawl... and mormons :dead:

My Dads family is from there and boy does it suck, especially in the summer.

Southern utah has good ridding but you really aren't going to find what you'd see in northern utah. Gooseberry mesa is a lot of fun to ride, I had more fun at gooseberry mesa than I did in moab if you're living in cedar city brian head is pretty close by and they have good ridding too, unfortunately that's about it unless you drive quite a ways north to salt lake or one of its suburbs or east to moab.

OOOooootah trail site

I did some XC and DH around the Virgin/St. George area a year ago. It was REALLY nice. I've heard that Bryan's Head (sp?) is really nice in the summer. Virgin/St George might be nice around midnight or so in the summer. But, you'll have good late season riding there. Have fun and post lots of pics!!!! :thumb:

oh, and people in utah are wierd, I'm mormon and I think they're wierd. You're guaranteed to get t-boned by some teenager driving a suv 80mph in the snow, kids generally get into more mischief than anywhere drugs are available, everywhere has a small town feel, even the big cities. If you don't already know someone it's hard to break into a social circle, even if you do know somebody you probabally won't want to be in their social circle. Overall I think utah is a nice place to visit in the summer time but it's a miserable place to live.

Kornphlake's right...this place is pretty ****ing weird. To be frank, it sucks to live here, but nice to visit. You will (Unless you suffer from some odd mental ailment) get progressively sick of the local populace, dry climate (Everything becomes brown...2nd driest state), and bizarre politics.

Cedar ****ty is pretty small, I believe gschuette is going to school down there. There is decent riding around, but you're about 5 hours south of Salt Lake. St. George is about 45 minutes south of Cedar, it's generally the only warm spot in Utah during the winter due to the elevation (I believe you drop about 2000 feet coming into St. George). Riding in SG is year-round usually, but it does usually get to 105-110 in the summer there. There is kickass riding there, and some semblance of a "night scene" due to the local overgrown high school (Dixie State College). It could qualify as the least Mormon spot in Utah next to Park City and the Avenues in Salt Lake. I would advise going to St. George as much as possible to prevent insanity (at least in non-summer months).

Cedar gets cold in the winter. Brian Head is close, which isn't bad. I'm not sure if they do DH lifting...I think they do, I've never ridden there. Don't count on being able to get to Gooseberry in the winter and spring unless you have something 4WD. There are shuttle spots in the St. George area (AKA Virgin, LaVerkin, etc). You're about...3.5 Hours from Las Vegas, if that's your thing.

I'm moving out of here in a couple months, mostly cause it's just too damned weird. Small towns like Cedar City (And where I live) usually have a very "sheltered" feel. I moved here from Salt Lake about 8 months ago and the difference between the two places is phenomenal (sp?). I thought Salt Lake was bad...but no...it gets worse.

Good luck moving into the Zion Curtain! :thumb:

You haven't spent much time in saint george have you? Like you say the only thing there is the local overgrown high school (dixie,) unfortunately it's exactly that, an overgrown high school. I guess if you consider throwing forks in people's lawn and cruising up and down St George blvd in your pimped out kia night life then you're right. I'd say there's at lest as much night life in cedar city because of the university, and at least there people might try to act mature. How far is the commute from Mesquite to cedar city, 1 hr? I'm not overly impressed with mesquite for the same reasons I dislike most of utah, but at least it's not in utah.

If you're into partying with Frat kids that couldn't make it into a 4-year, Dixie's the place to be. It's generally the place to go in UT if you're a dumbass jock/"plastic". I was just saying it has more of a night life than Cedar ;)

I always thought of Mesquite as a puddle in the desert with a couple casinos. I think I stayed there once.

Oh yeah, job market sucks. St. George has a plethora of service industry jobs due to the copious amounts of old people that live there in the winter, but they're generally not very well paying. Min wage is 5.15$(Federal), but most everyone here is a cheap bastard and will pay you as little as possible. If you work on a crap hourly wage+tips, I pity you. People here don't tip...it's kind of sad, really.

Definitely not into partying with frat bastiges.

I was thinking more about professional type work, I'm an engineer.

Thanks for the heads up, so far.

Brian head does have lift service all summer long.

What flavor engineer? Utah's technology industry is mostly in Northern Utah. As I said before, the major population base of So. Utah is St. George, and most jobs there are service-oriented. Good luck!
