time to bust out the vise grips and bend it back :D . the sun mtx is another rim you should consider.

There's a decent spit/crack in that rim. I wont be touching it.

Re: mtx. Have you ridden both the mtx and the Mag 30? I am pretty abusive/sloppy so I am gonna need max strength.

no, i haven't ridden the mag 30. my hardtail currently has singletrack/mtx rims, and the dh bike sported a set of atomic dhrs (i think. might be wrong on the model. atomics tho). what i'm basing the recommendation on are the comments of others on this board. iirc bizutch (? edit: make that jeremy r, bizutch's avatar stunt double) put a season of dh racing on a set of mtx rims without complaint.

Photos don't do justice.

I appreciate everyones "encouragement" but the fact is there is some bead showing and a very decent split/crack there, and regardless of the "hardcore factor" or whatever it is that keeps people riding comprimised gear, I am 31 years old, have a job and family to keep. A big off could really screw that all up. If I can afford the $$$ for a brand new safe and sure rim to enjoy my riding then I might aswell go get one.

Some of you youngins can deal with it for sure, go hard guys, but I don't bounce
like I used to, takes longer to heal and my job requires my to stay in one piece.

I will ride it but a new rim is on the list as soon as the budget opens up a little.

Are you sure the rim is cracked and not just the paint. You should be able to straighten the rim with vise grips. I had a 321 dent and I straightened it out and never had a problem. I swear by 321s.

Thats a problem? **** if i didn't bend back my trailpimps i'd have probably 15-20 dents in them. Just straighten it out or ride it and not care.

"If.....IF" that's not a crack (it is) bending it back will certainly make it one. Please Kanter, when you see a crack in the "paint" on your headtube/chainstay/bottom bracket, please stop riding it. Paint doesn't move or separate without the material it's attached to moving as well.

SKT: I'm 30 and don't bounce either. But I've also ridden a lot of mavic rims with what looks to be similar dents as yours without dying and leaving my poor mother weeping over my grave. Mavic 321/729 rims are some of the best made. That's what I've had on my DH bike for the last two years, getting rid of one wheel only because I needed a different hub and just decided to build a new wheel. I ride the thing every weekend during the summer at a lift accessed hill so my wheels get some mileage. I can tell you that I've seen more nipple eyelet cracks on friend's mag 30s than the mavics. There's no reason to abandon a good product just because you've experienced what's a pretty common occurrence riding big bikes fast over rocks. Just buy another of the same rim and put some more air in your tires. Most of the guys I know who race the pro norba circuit go through about 2-6 rims/wheels a season.

Cheers kidwoo. I have straightened it a little without too much hassle, just to get a little more tyre down in the rim. When I decide to have it rebuilt during winter I stay with the 321. My current spokes are all good so I wont have to get all new spokes due to different depth rim.

Cheers for the comments all.

Kidwoo,
Im also 31yo and I ride a Foes FLY with and 888/Avy and 321s. Im not a dumb a$$.:) Never would I ride my bike with a crack in the paint on a headtube, chainstay, or bottom bracket. :nope: Wheels are different. In the pic, it looks like the crack in the paint is parallel with the rim edge. IMO thats not real bad. I would NOT do any huge drops or try and beat the world speed record on them, but I think you could still ride it till funds allow a new wheel.

These are wheels. I have seen guys ride wheels with cracks at EVERY spoke, yes EVERY spoke. ASK HOW!!! He is the king at cracking wheels. All Im saying is that 321s are so strong that usually you can straighten them and ride them for a little while. I cant make a real judgement call without seeing the rim....

All in all, straighten it out and ride it carefully till a new rim arrives. By the way, I have 2 brand new, in plastic, 02 Yellow Deemaxx 321s waiting for Chris King hubs, I love the 321.

I understand where you are comming from but Mavic makes a great rim. Air pressure is the key, unless you want to run some big 2.7 Intense tires. I've killed 3 823's and 1 729 (aka 321) I had the samething happen to my 729, but I keep comming back for more.

Well I'm older than both of you so there :eviltongu  Anyways I know what he's talking about, on the impact it does put a small hairline crack on the rim right above the dent, so trying to straighten it will only make it worse. In its current condition it looks still ridable for a while, just needs to be monitored.

6-8 feet at lake level. My driveway is a halfpipe........so it's not all bad.

where do people get these estimates. must be the weather channel inflating the amounts. i got 5 feet max at my house ( i am in the banana belt though), enough to burry a small vw. i hit it with the sno blower by accident :nope:.

you sure don't ride like you're that much of an old geezer.

Those aren't estimates.

The 5 feet at your house is settled. Snow does that. Compare the density of the stuff on top to the stuff on the bottom.

i'm a MAsshole!!!
not sure if it's already mentioned, cause i don't feel like reading into this post much more, but i think you can get replacement rims from mavic if you break them. i have only heard stories of this from a guy on bustedspoke.com that i rode with once. he said he had tacoed a rim doing a drop and hitting a rock. he talked to amvic and they hook him up. forget if it was totally free or dealer price. i think free + shipping, but not sure. search the bustedpsoke.com forum for the guy.

Time to go Mag 30
You hit a rock with your rim (meaning that the PSI in the tire wasn't enough to prevent this, and even with a lot of PSI you could theoretically still hit a sharp edged rock hard enough in a freak occurance to do it).

Do you seriously think there is ANY rim out there (remember that they are made from aluminum) that can stand up to hitting a rock at 30mph?

I'll save you the trouble and tell you that it doesn't matter what kind of rim you had on there, the same thing would have happened no matter what given the same conditions of PSI and whatever it was you hit.

And yeah, don't try to "bend" a rim back, mavics usually crack when you do this. They are stronger rims in my experience, but they don't "bend back" like some softer ones do.

Yes... I've seen a guy ride down 3/4 of a LONG course (over 8 mins pro times, plenty of rocks) on his rim after tearing the tyre pretty much right off (it ended up wrapped around the hub I think). It was dinged up like hell by the end, but not one of them was as bad as the one pictured. It was an Alex something too, not sure of the model though. I was pretty impressed with that effort!

Yep, I flatted at Vermont this year in that stupid 40mph section, and did not know it. By the time I stopped, I put 4 dents in my MTX rim. It did not even get knocked out of true, just the rim bent. SO, at the bottom, I bent them all back and rode the same rim for the rest of the year with no cracks.
Any rim would have bent in that situation, I was just lucky mine could be fixed.
