This is not rumor... this is fact...

Because of 30 extra feet of snow this year that can't melt or be cleared in time, the MTB National Championships will not be at Mammoth this year.

Right now the new location is looking like Angel Fire or Sonoma, with Vail or Durango as possibilites as well. It all depends on whether these places can get the manpower to put the event on in the relevantly short time necessary.

I should have more information by the end of the week and will pass it on.

It's not official yet... last "rumour" I heard from Mammoth is their snowpack is melting off quicker than expected, but we'll see how it plays out.

Angel Fire is a FANTASTIC mountain, and I think one of the first to put in a bid to host when the "news" came out. They've already held a World Cup and hosted the Collegiate MTB Nationals a couple of times, and the staff is VERY motivated when it comes to bike racing. They could certainly pull it together to make this happen if need be.

And as much as I LOVE Angel Fire, we do at least two races there every year, so if a different venue happened *cough*cough*Vail*cough*cough* I would be pretty stoked as well.

I got an e-mail from USA cycling confirming that there will be no Mammoth this year and that they are looking for another venue.

Have it at Northstar!

errr... maybe that won't work. Squaw had a world cup a while back, Durango could easily host it, and the Northwest would be a great spot for a race as well. There's gotta be some good ski resorts/mountains in Oregon.

The '99 WC DH at squaw was pretty cool to see - they even had an Amateur race on a different course (pretty weak) my first podium...sniff sniff. Sonoma aint up to the task IMHO....they have the Norba Nat there just before the Nat Champs were scheduled to be anyway.
