Mud insurance

The 24 hours of the Adirondaks is 11th and 12th of this month. Looking at all the hurricanes gnawing their way north, I am becoming concerned about a mudfest.

I'm thinking about murdering a cluster and getting a bunch of spacers so as to be able to rapidly and conveniently singlespeed my ride if things get too ugly. Are the bits to do this commonly available?

You probably have the parts necessary to do that already.

Something about putting "Adirondacks" and "singlespeed" in the same sentence makes my legs hurt though.

Well, I'm going to be hurting anyway if it turns into a bog, I just don't want to be immobilized by adobe packed shifting gear in the rear. I can run or crawl up hills, but it would be nice to be able to pedal at least part of the time.

Absolutely no idea how many teeth to use, though. Guess I'll learn quick.

Most singlespeeds are around a 2:1 ratio, as in 32 / 16. I run a "beginner" singlespeed ratio of 32 / 17. I would recommend you try out your gear ratio in advance, before jumping into singlspeeding head first in a 24 hour race :D
