From the latest issue of DIRT (U.K):

“At the Les Gets World Cup 2004, Fabien and Tracy from Kona/Clarks had decided to ride on Tioga Mud tires.”

Why did they choose Tioga MUD tires front and rear for a super dry course?
Can someone give some info on this ‘weird’ choice of tires?
Obviously more grip and …?

Thx

he did the same here for a race on a totally dry track, i asked him why and he told me that way he felt much more secure in the bermed corners.

the idea is to use the pointy thread of the mud tires to cut through the loose stuff and grip the portion of soil that still was
grippy.

I think he used Mud tires the hole 2004 season (dry or wet). He uses those tires with a lot of preasure (>30lbs). I've heard it's for better cornering...

Yes, as alber said, Frenchie used the spyke all season...mainly because all the other Tioga tires sucked so bad, it was the only one that hooked up-as he once told me "eeets a little slow, but I like zee grip"

At Les Gets Barrel was faster on the frist part (the slow one). On the second part (the fast one) he was slower than many riders.

Peat was the only rider faster than Barrel on the frist part. It looks like the MUDs are OK for technical stuff, but for fast stuff they are no good.

The rolling resistance is what notice the most when I ride with my Michelin Mud's on a dry course.
The grip is good in almost all conditions, but I wonder if this is a real ‘advantage’ compared to the rolling resistance of a mud tire ?

For my personally,
I feel a lot more confident on off-camber sections with my mud’s, that’s where I always slow down the most with my ‘usual’ tires.

I saw that Peat didn’t have Mud’s in LesGets, because he crashed in front of me. (seriously :)

Ha I was going to suggest that his choice of tires was limited and the muds might have been the only ones that worked!
What happened to Tioga, they used to have a great range of tyres. Look at most of the tops DH'ers and they ride Maxxis!

So I'm on the sh*tter and reading the issue of DIRT (#48 p.52) where they covered Les Gets and there's a pic of Barel riding Highrollers at the World Cup. I quess Tioga is a sponser so that was the "official" word.

Yeah, there is NO WAY Russell (Kona Team Manager) would let that go down (Barel riding maxxis)...he is one of the few team managers who is a man of his word and wont let a sponsor down.
