Anyone Monkey currently living or who have ever lived in Munich Germany?

I am considering going there for a few (3-6) months in early 2005. I will be going to work for a small magazine if it works out, and am wondering what living expenses would be like?

I heard that Munich is one fo the most expensive cities in Europe. Is this true?

What is rent, food etc expenses like?

What is the riding like? How far from the mountains? Is it a bike friendly city?

Hm, can't answer all of that too accurately, but I did spend some time there when I was studying in Salzburg.

As far as riding, well, you're in Bavaria...has to be tons of stuff out there. And they run ski trains during the winter to all the mountain resorts, so maybe they do the same in summer...in any case, you should be able to rail your way to many mountain resort towns, even if it's not a ski-specific train.

The city is historic and scenic and all; some good art museums with an Expressionist focus as I remember. Don't recall general prices being more than the rest of Germany, but I was buying beer and sausages at 1 am, not renting an apartment...

Hi Fraser,

you are right munich is expensive!
especially the rent for a place to live.
but that strongly depends on your luck and what kind of appartment/flat you want.

food isn't that expensive!
going out and partying is expensive, at least more then in most other ciries,
but you get used to it.

the city it self is quite bike friendly.
we have some really nice trails which start right in the city.

the mounrtains are close, you have about 4 DH parks within 2 hours driving.

ok got to go, if yopu need some specific info or some help shoot me a PM!

When you are there, do avail yourself of the local breweries: Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Spaten, etc. I put down some Paulaner doppelbock this past Saturday and had Hacker-Pschorr dunkelweizen the weekend before. The Muenchen beer yeasts used in the weissbiers impart a particular banana-clove flavor to the unfiltereds that make them my absolute favorites. This coming month would be a good time to visit and do some preliminary legwork, what with Oktoberfest being so near.
