Ok....maybe I'm just a big lame but I'v been listening the the Cure quite a bit lately. My daughter loves it too. (She smiles at me and says "Show me show me!"...and she whispers along with Rob Smith to the spider man "Thpidah!"....It's frickin cute I tell you) But wasn't the Cure supposed goth music? And as I understand it, goth is suposed to be dark and brooding....so why is the Cure so upbeat?

And I know I was wrong when I said it was true...LA LA LA LA.......

listen to _Pornography_ or the _Carnage Visors_ EP....it's pretty dark. plus, they likely got lumped in when bobby smith was also pulling double duty as a member of siouxsie and the banshees.

Yeah, i always thought of the Cure as more of a New Wave-ish band than a goth band...certainly more upbeat than many of their contemporaries, like the prototypic goth band Bauhaus.

This topic calls for some Ben Folds lyrics that make me laugh:

"Oh well maybe not I’ll try again
This should cheer you up for sure
See I've got your old I.D.
And you're all dressed up like the Cure"

-Mackie (all dressed up like the Cure in his H.S. sophomore ID picture  :D )

Haha...that's what I thought of immediately too. I think the band and Smith look like goth rockers in appearance, but there music (for the most part) is not. But is goth primarily an image or a type (sound-wise) of music?

Probably people who don't know anything about The Cure, or new wave, or goth, think Robert Smith looks goth so therefore The Cure must be goth.

that's a good question...is bauhaus considered goth? if so, it because they wore black all the time, and/or wrote a song about bela lugosi?

the definition of goth is fairly broad and undetermined, but i'd think the banshees would fall into that category...they didn't start out that way (they were contemporaries of the Pistols; sid was their 1st "drummer"), as evidenced by "The Lord's Prayer" and "Metal Postcard". but listen to stuff on _Juju_ or _A Kiss in the Dreamhouse_ or _Tinderbox_; there's definitely some goth trappings on there.

what would people consider true goth bands? here's my stab:

fields of the nephelim (gotta love that flour-dusted look)
sisters of mercy
alien sex fiend (or where they more batcave?)
the damned (only circa _Phantasmagoria_)
the march violets
southern death cult (pre-Cult)

seems to be mainly limited to UK bands

You might be able to add Mary My Hope to that list. I liked "Museum" but I think that was their only release.

Fileds of the Nephelim was always good for clearing a room at a party.

I never really thought of the Cure as Goth, Bauhaus on the other hand...

Einstuerzende Neubauten is another goth favorite.

EDIT -- Can't forget Nick Cave.

So what you you consider the Jesus and Mary Chain to be?

I KNEW the Cure wasn't goth.....
Jesus & Mary chain is totally not Goth. They have a Pearl Jam kind of sound, but not in the bad way that Pearl Jam sucks.

I think the rock equivalent would be explaining the difference between Led Zepplin and the Doobie Brothers. It is pretty obvious to any rock listener but the subtlies might be missed on someone else.

Goth is such a varied style anymore. Seems a lot of today's goth is metal-based, with dark lyrics. Where do bands like Black Tape For A Blue Girl and Loves Lies Crushing fit these days? They used to be considered goth, and their label, Projekt, one of the premier goth labels. Their music was more dark, brooding, etheral type stuff.

I stopped trying to match my outfits to my music a long time ago. If I like it, I'll listen. :)

How about Ministry... not the old stuff from the early 80's but the stuff from the 90's?

I really liked With Sympathy but never got into their later speed metal sound...

al jourgenson hates _with sympathy_ so much he's destroyed the master tapes and it is permanently out of print. never heard it myself, but it sounds like it's pretty sissy from all accounts.

bikegeek, good call on projekt. another goth label of note: nate starkman and son

red temple spirits and fourwaycross were pretty damned good.

It was a nice album with some great dance tunes. Typical NuWave fair but still great! i have a copy. :)

Their stuff after it sucked IMO because it was just like every other speedmetal band out there.

Huh? I'm no big Ministry fan, but they sure as hell never sounded like every other speedmetal band out there

I was a huge Ministry fan back in the day...They had an industrial sound back in the 90's (not sure about now) which I guess some might confuse with metal...

more industrial than speedmetal. i am not a big fan of the industrial genre, but i do like certain parts of the 1st vanguard. stuff like Nurse With Wound, Current 93, Throbbing Gristle, etc. Whitehouse played in boston the same night i went to see Super Furry Animals...that would have been night and day had i gone after SFA's set.
