I would say they have the bios telling it to boot from A:\ first. You need to change the bios to boot from c:\.

Check and see if your phone battery is dead first.

It means your computer is experiencing deep hurting. Either something in the bios is telling it to look at your a: drive, or for whatever reason, it's not finding the files it needs to boot on the harddrive.

Doug got it. Either you have a non-bootable disk in the floppy drive, or your new hard drive's boot sector is corrupt.

That message will be, "Non-system disk or disk error"

Your computer is probably in a great deal of pain, and it's probably time to reinstall your operating system.

If you have a bootable floppy disk, try using it and see if your computer can even see your hard drive.

...nothing to do with a phone battery whatever that meant...

I was hearing this weird beep from my computer. Well, it wasn't. There was a dead battery in the cordless phone laying by the computer. :(

Ironically, the computer will beep when the CMOS battery is dead or nearing death.

Ok this is weird...last night they (place that replaced my harddrive last time and where I took it last night) said that there was some freak virus that got in and wiped out the harddrive and I will need to replace it again. THEN...they call this am and say, it's working fine...what the hell...

Can viruses just get into your computer without opening any weird files or visiting any weird sites?

Don't take your computer there again - they don't appear to know what they are talking about and it seems that they would rather just have you pay for a new HD than do a bit of homework themselves. It sounds to me like they may have just removed your HD from the "Boot Order" in bios, while loading your OS, and forgotten to change it back when they gave you the machine back.

If your computer is not fully updated with all the latest patches, and you connect it to the interent without the Windows Firewall turned on (if you have Win XP) or some other firewall, the average time for infection with a virus is 14 minutes.

From experience (I rebuild a lot of computers here at work) I would say that 14 minutes is on the optimistic side. Its usually less than 5. You don't have to open anything, and its usually the "Sasser" virus, which doesnt really do that much that is harmfull, but someone may have modified it, it has the potential to be anything someone wants it to be.

The way to avoid this, is turn the Windows Firewall on before connecting your computer to the internet (for Windows XP) or turn another firewall on before connecting, then go to Windows Update, and get all the latest updates and patches. Its a pain in the ass, and it will take a bit of time, but it will help keep your computer safer. Make sure you keep going back to Windows Update untill it tells you there are no more updates to get.

Hope this helps.

I plugged this into my Idiot Translator and it said:

"I'm a fvcking moron who didn't install the drive properly, but my boss will take it out of my paycheck if I'm the one who screwed it up, so I will blame it on a freak virus.

Wait. Wait, hey look, it's booting up! YAY! Nevermind, there was no virus."

I don't have windows XP at home, just windows 2000. I don't know if I actually HAVE a firewall? I have no clue, but I installed the Norton 2004 AntiVirus software as soon as I got it back last time. Where would I find a firewall? I'm really ignorant when it comes to the technical stuff with computers...thanks for the info...and do I do this everytime I turn on the computer?

Go to www.download.com and search for "zonealarm" - you can get it for free, it's simple, and it works relatively well, though there is a learning period for the FW that can be kind of a PITA.

Also - you really should familiarize yourself with windows update - I'm not sure that I agree with the opinion expressed above (about the time it takes to become infected) - but updates are very important nonetheless, and will save you much grief in the long run.

Another question about backing stuff up...what is the best way...my brother was saying something about a 'bastard' drive or piggy back drive, I can't remember what he called it...but what is a good way to back stuff up? I lost HUNDREDS of unreplaceable pictures and other stuff I wanted to keep when I lost the hard drive last time...
