Go to www.download.com and search for "zonealarm" - you can get it for free, it's simple, and it works relatively well, though there is a learning period for the FW that can be kind of a PITA.

Also - you really should familiarize yourself with windows update - I'm not sure that I agree with the opinion expressed above (about the time it takes to become infected) - but updates are very important nonetheless, and will save you much grief in the long run.

So these viruses require the windows patches and Norton will not pick up the viruses? Where do these viruses come from? Just some nerdy tool that has nothing better to do that has a hard on for bill gates?

Another question about backing stuff up...what is the best way...my brother was saying something about a 'bastard' drive or piggy back drive, I can't remember what he called it...but what is a good way to back stuff up? I lost HUNDREDS of unreplaceable pictures and other stuff I wanted to keep when I lost the hard drive last time...
Buy a USB mem stick ($40 for 256mb) go into "Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks -> create new task -> backup" Set backup for once a week, day or whatever & point the backup toward your USB drive (which will automatically be recognized by your comp and will show up in windows explorer as a drive, like c: ) - this is nice to because the USB stick will require no drivers, and will allow you to carry lots of data to and from other computers (like work) on something the size of a keychain.

We used NAV (now SAV) here at work, and many people would be amazed by the stuff that is not picked up by many of the major vendors (for those geeks out there - our updates are set to check Symantec daily and push new defs to each machine @ logon, realtime protection is enabled) I have cleaned all kind of sh1t off the network here.

I read another one that said 14 minutes. In any case, its less than 20. And like I said, from experience, its usually a lot less than that, that is just an average.

I will second the "Zone Alarm" recomendation, it works well, and is really easy to use. I always ran it when I had a Win2k machine at home.

Wow...my head is spinning...ok...so how does the memory stick not have to be in something? Shouldn't it be in a reader of some sort? Where do you put the memory stick?
If you have a USB port (which you probably do - though it may be on the back of your machine if your computer is older) you simply plug it in, wait a couple of minutes while the computer detects it, and you should be good to go - it's simpler than it sounds - really ;)

Also - the USB stick looks like a keychain - once you look @ the end, it should become apparent where it plugs in. Any geek at comp usa / best buy will know what you are talking about if you ask him for a USB memory stick.

yeah I do have two usb ports on the back...so this usb memory stick thing, it's attached to a usb cord that just goes into the usb outlet? I'm picturing the memory sticks for my digital cameras...

I'd rather admit to watching midget transexual porn than Raising Helen...

I know. What I wouldn't want to admit to is that you have been watching it and having IM sex while doing so with stosh and pressley.

Ok this is weird...last night they (place that replaced my harddrive last time and where I took it last night) said that there was some freak virus that got in and wiped out the harddrive and I will need to replace it again. THEN...they call this am and say, it's working fine...what the hell...

Can viruses just get into your computer without opening any weird files or visiting any weird sites?
Sounds like CYA on their part.
