She's 4. She can read 29 books now. (Not exactly War and Peace mind you). She corrects herself when she makes a mistake. She totally gets it. She's so pleased with herself. It's really awesome to watch.

(Her french is getting pretty good too)

Accorind to my mom, (who is a literacy specialist with the school board), she's reading better than many 7 year-olds....

Now if I could only get her off that little yellow bike.....

I guess that's a separate thread......

My mom has been working with her this summer. She teaches something called Reading Recovery. Developed in NZ I think. It's not so much about teaching phoen...uh....faux-net...um.....the sounds letters make, but teaching word recognition. Because when people read, they don't sound out words. They recongnize the word. So it's the same idea. New words can be sounded out as required. But the foundation of the whole thing is teaching word recognition (within a context).

Emily has such a crazy good memory, it's worked really well for her.

Sweet. It's cool that you're teaching her French as well. That's defiantly the time to learn a second language. It sucks when you're older.

Give her allowance as your personal spell checker.

mine's 5 (nearly 6), and is transitioning from recognition-from-repetition to proper cold reading. if the true litmus test is reading the front page of usatoday, she's probably 2 yrs off w/o pushing her. my first memory of reading was probably 2nd grade.

her handwriting is only slightly less sloppy than mine.

complementing w/ french is nice (not the city)

I was just cleaning out a bunch of old crap, and stumbled across a few things from elementary school. My handwriting is only a little bit better than it was in 3rd grade. It's more even and looks less childish, but not really any more legible.

As a design engineer I am very fortunate that CAD software was in place when I entered the workplace. I'm left-handed. no matter how hard I try, I cannot write/print like a grown-up. It's pretty sad actually.

:stupid:

I used to write letters in the Navy using print slightly smaller than news print to save space. I can write small, legibly, but when I jot notes, it's awful. It looks better than my 7 year old.

So yeah.....I'm pretty pleased with this.......

Emily read Green Eggs and Ham in its entirety all by herself. And no-one even prompted her to do it. She just picked it up and started reading it.

Once again, she's 4 and a half.

I hope you can read Green Eggs and Ham.

Also if you are averaging a B in school and can't uppercase your i's, I have lost all faith in the education system.

nothing makes a dad more proud than when their child does well. My son is literally teaching me Spanish (he's 4 also)

there's no question that they a "smarter" than us because they are better learners
