Well, I just got back last night from the National Championships at Mammoth. This is my first year of NORBA competition and at the ripe age of 31 I am racing Expert DH. I also qualified for 4x, but decided not to do it because of scheduling and logistics. :nopity: Anyway...

ALTITUDE kills!

I broke my arm July 18th and the lack of time on the bike in DH condidions really weakened my fitness levels. By Saturday's race I could barely make it down the mountain without falling over from fatigue. I took 3 runs on Thursday, 2.5 on Friday and 1 on Saturday. It was my plan to progressively slow down the number of runs I took to conserve energy, but I don't think it mattered. My fitness was weak to begin with that by the third day the altitude had taken its toll. Eventhough, I stayed well hydrated and fed, but it didn't help.

Sitting in the start gate my plan was to conserve energy up top and accelerate the course at the bottom on Chainsmoke. In my head I kept saying "Going for a ride, going for a ride, going for a ride..." On the sixth beep I was off. About 75 ft down the course was the only problem section I had with the course, which was technical, but not over the top. I had the most problem with the pumice not the steepness or tightness. Anyway the section that was screwing with me was the run out to the righthand wall ride. I cleaned it fine on the first day of practice, but the last two days of practice I didn't clean it once. But during my race run I cleaned it. Not the best looking effort, but I stayed on the bike and rode it out and I was so stoked going into the bottom section. After Pinball Wizard I rode a little bucking bronc action going into the shoot out onto the ski slope, but I held it together and setup to dropin. I dropped down and was flying acrosss the slope letting my Yeti do the work, when I looked up to see my first pass. At full speed I yelled at the guy that I was going to pass. Much to my suprize he came across the trail form the right to the left and took me out. BOOM! I was tumbling and cartwheeling. I got up and ran back to my bike and of course I had to untangle it from his. I could just feel the course clock ticking away at an accelerated rate. I got back up to speed and headed down to Chainsmoke. Come to find out another race had passed me during all the excitement. As I dropped into the coffin jumps, I heard someone else yell to pass, so I tried my best to slow down and get over to let him pass in the jumps. As I was dragging the rear wheel and waiting I looked and didn't see anyone, so I got back up to speed and dropped into Chainsmoke. About two turns in I heard him yell again, so I moved over, watched him pass, then watched him wreck in the next corner. I passed him, then I thought to myself he might still be having a good run so I pulled over, stopped and put a foot down. He passed me, when through the tape and DNFed. :mumble: Anyway I rolled to a 21st finish with a time of 8:11. :nopity: It sounds like I lost alot of time due to stopping and crashing, but honestly my lack of fitness is what did me in. I think at best I could have had a 7 minute run, which is still 55 seconds off the winning time.

However, I did have a blast, met a lot of cool people, and I'll do it again next year for sure.

Glad you had a good time and got home safe.
That is always a plus for us. ;)
As far as all that passing stuff, racing Expert Dh at
Nationals is like a 4 cross except not everybody starts at the same time. :thumb:

Oh man a headwind was blowing like 20 mph on the finish in pro. I have good fitness and live at 6500 ft. That last little bit of the course was soooooooooo stupid.

My Mammoth experience wasn't the greatest either. I raced beginner, and on my first run Saturday, crashed at one of the fastest sections of the course. Not only that, but I couldn't get my BigHit build up in time, so I ended up riding my urban (hardtail) bike with some DH tires slapped onto it. I crashed at the section after the first log jump in all the braking bumps and high-sided onto my shoulder. It still won't move. I did have fun and it was good to get away for a while, but I'm bummed I didn't get to race.

Yeah, in my crash my derailleur got stuck in the easiest gear and I had nothing for the final section, which was lame. :nopity:

Sorry I didn't meet up with you man. Last week's snow made leaving tahoe pretty difficult. Especially since I hadn't been on a bike in 2 months. I couldn't resist the northstar urge. Glad you had fun despite the bad stuff ..........and got to see yosemite. That's definitely the scenic route back to the sacramento valley.

Yeah, it was like an out-of-body experience. I knew I was going faster and in more control in Thursday's practice, but by Saturday I couldn't go fast without getting winded and crashing too much. My local DH course has 2500 ft of elevation change, but that from 3000 to 500 ft sea level, not 11,000 to 9000 ft. BIG difference. I think I can be in better shape next year if I'm on the bike in the months leading up to the race. So next year... no injuries. ;)

No, I tried to find him and let him know that I was cool with everything. But I really blame NORBA. 30 second intervals on that course was really lame.

I raced Kamakaze and sport DH. My chain got sucked into my chainguide on both races. :( Bottom of Kamakaze I had to run with my bike to the finish. In sport dh tho i was able to pump all the bumps and not touch the brakes the whole way down and was able to get the win. My friend got flagged down on the step up jump and was 1 second behind me.

There was a good foot and a half at the top and 8+ inchs at mid on monday and tuesday. It was pretty interesting riding in the snow. My friend jumped the waterfall to flat and wiped out pretty good since it was so slippery.

But four of my close friends did.

Here's what happened...

1. On his first day of practice, Erik came into a steep, pumice section, that you had to go between two large rocks with enough room for 1 person. Only, there was some chick standing in the way..."rider up!" and she only moved enough for him to hit one of the rocks, go OTB 10' down superman stylz, into a pile of more rocks. 5 stitches, a lot of little cuts, and a swollen forearm later, she never even aknowledge that she did anything wrong. Who stands in the MIDDLE of a single track on a downhill run? Erik was out for the count, unable to race and was in an alcoholicly depressed, inebriated state the rest of the weekend.

2. My friend Mike pulled a muscle in his back while practicing the DH and couldn't ride the DH race, so he opted for the MtnX. He of course fvcked up his first gate and was immeadiately eliminated. He's out for the count.

3. Kyler made it pretty far in the MtnX race only to be knocked off the course in the second to last round (over a berm, in mid-air), only when he stood up his wheel was rolling away from him. Broken dropouts ended his evening.

4. Scott, well, he tried to race the DH on a 2003 Enduro SX with a 5' fork, crashed, and got like 20 something-th place. He usually gets like 3rd or 4th. Bummer for him. Scott also got some miserable altitude sickness and was suffering the whole time.

So as Mike dubbed it, "It was a weekend of failure, but we went out to the bars and tore that town a new a$$hole!" So, in actuality, it was deemed an overall success.

Funny side story; Apparently Erik was so drunk on Saturday that was went up to Brian Lopes during MtnX and started trying to talk to him. He was even fussing around with BL's fox fork and changing settings or something. Kyler was watching and pretending that he didn't know Erik, and I guess BL looked like he was REALLY pissed off. He didn't do anything, which is lucky for our dear friend Erik, 'cause Erik would have gotten BEAT DOWN. There was an argument later on about "...who had to deal with the filthy rummy on the drive home." Erik doesn't seem to remeber anything at all about that day.

I saw that dude on the SX and was thinking that it looked like fun to rip such a light bike down the course. The breaking bumps would be the only thing I would be really scared of. That and maybe pinball wizard I think lots of travel really helped in there.

From what I heard though, the course would have been gnarly on anything less than a full blown DH bike. Scott rode that little SX on the Shore for a week AND on everything in whistler for another. That bike is amazing and Scotty is one hell of a rider. Of course he's broken it at least 2 times that I've seen.

In terms of Mammoth mountain, what would you say was a more important factor with the bike on that course; assuming rider ability is not the main part of the equation? Cornering prowess or DH descending ability (ie slack angles)?

I could see how a slack bike will carry you through some of the loamy stuff and rough with more speed. I was told that some of my friends would have preferred to borrow my V10. But it sounds like from your POV that it would be OK on something less.

I think a light bike would be best. Being able to correct the bike very quickly was important. I don't remember anything on that course that scraed me other than the high speed section after pinball wizard, which is were I crashed. It was so fast there that a bike like my Yeti was so at home, but there weren't any HUGE hits. Slack angles are a must on a course like that, it was steep. So I don't think a 7" freeride bike would have been better, but I should have steepen the head angle, raised the bb, and shortened the wheelbase on my Yeti some. I didn't think there were too many off camber sections that really required a super low bb for cornering. I used to have a SX and remember feeling so at home on that bike. I raced it in some DH races around here and I thought it kicked a$$. However, the rear shock on mine was sprung really high so in effect it was almost a hardtail. I just remember being able to pick up the frontend of that bike and it going about anywhere I wanted it to.

But in my state (weak and with little fitness), I think I could have had a better run going slow up top and faster towards the bottom on a lighter bike rather than going slightly faster up top and slower towards the bottom on a heavy bike. I will say this, that was the last race I will ever do on my Shiver. Its just too heavy to make the front end super resonsive. I'm not saying I would have traded my DH9 for a SX, but a lighter setup DH9 would have been better.

Dude! Is your Yeti yellow? All I remember in the confusion was that the bike was yellow. I think! If it was you man, i'm so sorry for getting in your way. I was suffering at that point, having crashed my brains out in Pinball Wizard and simultaneously getting a flat tire. I had no idea I was on the right side of the course! When I heard you yell I just instinctively moved to the left, thinking you were going to pass on the right. Then I heard, "on your le.." and BOOM. We were a tangled mess! I tried to get your bike back to you ASAP but I knew I had just f'ed up your day. I really do apologize! It was an honest ( and altitude affected) mistake.

You think riding an SX is bad? I was riding a Specialized Hard Rock. No really. Stop laughing. It's got new parts, but aluminum HTs aren't good for DH.

I heard that Sport 19-24 sucked. The guy that won raced Expert all last year. Now that's a Sandbagger.

Don't sweat it man. Profro has been racing long enough to know that this kind of stuff happens and it is a part of racing. Well, nationals anyway.
One year at Snowshoe, me and this guy were both having crap runs and we passed each other about 10 times. It was horrific and we both got in each others way numerous times. As long as Norba runs 30 seconds intervals, this stuff is going to happen. ;)

:D Nah, I had a yellow jersey and a red bike. I looked for you after the race to let you know all was cool. I really was upset at the moment it happened, but about ten feet down the course I was cool. Like I said it wasn't the crashing that did me in, but it was the lack of fitness. Actually when I saw you handing me my bike I figured you were in as much of an altitude stuper as I was. All cool, no big deal. Heck I was riding at Mammoth, how bad can that be? :D

Yeah, I had a red Yeti. I saw you a bunch, but never said hello. My bad. I saw you park your truck in a funky way on the way to the awards Sat. nite.
