edit: Complete bike pictures posted towards the end of the thread. See here and here if you're too lazy to scroll ;)

So, haven't ridden in a while and have been contemplating building something up a little more trailbike-ish than my 35+ lb. Imperial. I've really lusted after an Evil Sovereign but they were just too far out of my price range.

All of a sudden, things fell into place all at once. I had a buyer who wanted my Imperial. And poof, a barely-used Sovereign appeared in the Buy&Sell forum. It had to be fate.

Swapped my 8" rotors for some 6" rotors + cash, shipped off the Imperial, and met up with Dogboy to score my new Sovereign frame. A stand up guy, by the way - he couldn't find the spacers I needed for the stem we included in the deal, so he threw in a handlebar gratis. And the frame is in awesome shape, barely a scratch on it.

So, without further ado, here is some bike porn for everyone to drool over.

Yep, that'd be the much-revered Reynolds 853 steel tubing:

Adjustable XX dropouts, awesome design:

Seat tube brace to allow good saddle height but maintain excellent standover:

Nice weld penetration there:

Can't wait to get it built up! Build pictures & notes tomorrow.

I had a PM to Dogboy about 3 minutes after he posted. You would have to have been quick on the draw to beat me to it ;)

Geared... I'm way too out of shape to try and push a SS around. I may try a single speed setup in the future on it, though.

Build it light, and I'll meet you in Pisgah for a steel trailbike ride-off.
It's going to be medium weight. Cranks, tires and wheels could all stand to lose some weight (they're all DH worthy) but I don't have the bucks for it.

Beauty!!

PowersUSA was almost able to turn one of those frames into a 29er.......so close, but the rear tire rubbed that little bit of extra frame that runs out the back.

Gorgeous color!

enjoy!

My Cove will weigh around 25# without sacrificing any strength. Crossmax Xl's, XTR stuff. Can the Evil stay below 30?

Probably not at the moment. We'll see. Build will be:

- 5" Manitou Sherman Firefly TPC+
- Rhyno Lites laced w/ straight gauge spokes to XT rear hub & Formula 20mm front
- Michelin Comp24 2.3" tires (heavy :dead: )
- FSA V-drive Xtreme cranks
- E.13 DRS chainguide
- WTB TXC stem & oversized bar (thanks again, Dogboy!)
- Cane Creek Solos headset
- Thomson post
- WTB Speed V saddle
- Hayes HFX-Comps
- XT rear deraulleur, LX cassette, XTR chain

Wheels, tires and cranks are real pigs. I couldn't spend the bucks for anything else, though, since I had to break even on this build. No front derailleur yet either.

Most folks around here run dual rings with a bashguard and no chainguide and have no problems whatsoever. I think that could save a little bit of weight.

Why do you need the chainguide?
Because I've lost my chain too many times to ride without one. I'll sacrifice the grams every time to keep my chain from stopping the ride. We'll see, I may try going without it for a while.

edit: it's a freakin' DRS, it's not for a DH bike Burly ;)

It freaks me out seeing the scar on the back of my co-workers leg from the third ring. :wonky2: Besides, I hit way too many rocks to run that 3rd ring and not total it.

Yeah, the bashring I will not do without. Period.

Wow, 10,000 posts. I think it's appropriate that it's in the thread of my dream bike :D

This thread makes me giddy. Waiting on a secret weapon from TBC. Middle of the summer is the worst time to be bikeless :help:

Sell your computer.

Which is more important? Posting on RM, or riding?

Maybe the only thing your computer is useful for is posting on RM... Some of us have multi-function computers, not the least of which is the ability to view and process my photographs :p

Never!

Film? What is this, 1950? ;)

I've got a couple things kicking around that I might try to unload on eBay... but I really am not dumping a bunch of money into this bike. It's perfectly ridable with the extra 4 or 5 pounds on it.

Nice score! I wonder how many items have changed hands through that forum over the years.
I know that I have picked up two frames through the Buy And Sell forum. Much nicer buying from a Monkey than on ebay.

Nice frame there, BV. Can't wait to read some ride reports.

Maybe its just the trails around here, but I never once needed my big ring on my trek hardtail. Pushing a big ring is a deathwish on a bike with a 71* HA in my opinion.

I need to go to the Home Depot to get some ghetto star nut and crown race mounting materials.

I picked up 10' of PVC pipe for $4 for my crown race. I've got 9' of it in my closet - if it weren't more expensive to ship it to you than it would be to buy your own, I'd give you some :p

Star nut mounting materials all came out of my toolbox. I'll snap a photo of what I used and upload it with the rest of my build pictures tomorrow.
