We're kicking off the 2024 Secret Santa! Exchange gifts with other monkeys - from beer and snacks, to bike gear, to custom machined holiday decorations and tools by our more talented members, there's something for everyone.
awesome photography! Number 9 in the mountain bike section, with the blue bike, hes doing a trick, (although i cant remember what it is) but his facial expression is completely blank!
Photographers using flash REALLY annoys me. It really isn't necessary and just adds complications. No one wants to steal 72dpi, 4x5" pictures, no matter how good the photog thinks they are.
Nice pics though, and I like the simple layout that allows them to be the focal point instead of some busy design.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone, glad most of you like it! Unfortunately dwaugh, the site is going to be a task for anyone with dial-up. I guess it's a sacrifice I made when I designed the site. What speed dial-up are you running? I have run tests with 56K and it worked, it just takes about 15-20 seconds to load each page. But anything under 56K probably won't work too well.

You have a point Transcend. I didn't choose Flash because I was worried about people stealing my images. If they wanted the 72 dpi 4x5's, they could just got to the online store and nab the jpegs. I chose Flash because I have never built a website completely in Flash, so it was more of a learning experience for me. I also like how it's simple, clean, and for the most part, Flash websites are viewed as professional. I don't necessarily think that, but if others do, I may have better chance of selling some prints down the road.

Unfortunately, dial-up is highly variable, especially when you consider where a lot of people live who are forced to have it. Often, people are limited to dial-up because they live out in the sticks where a dish is the only other (expensive) option.
When you live in rural areas, phone lines are very commonly sub-obtimal so even 56k speeds might be half what they are in an area where you're getting maximum download speeds. The wiring in or leading to houses might also not be great, which further reduces the speed.
So... I guess my only point is that your testing of 56k speeds is not necessarily going to be consistant with everyone else's.
Regardless... I'm not a big fan of flash based sites. Yours isn't bad, though, and the pictures are great.

Ah ok. Learning is a good reason. Most photographers excuses are "we need it for the security". Like a screen grab is somehow rendered non functional?
Anyways, it's my experience as both a photographer and web designer, that people are starting to see flash (finally) as more annoying than professional. The only sites that can use flash properly are highly interactive sites, like car dealers who use it to swap colors, and options etc. Otherwise, all of flash's features can be mimicked using other methods that don't require plugins.
Good luck! Maybe I'm just bitte rbecause I have been working on various flash projects for weeks now and absolutely abhore it.

My personal bias against Flash is that it's primarily a tool for wanna-be movie directors with no budget and no social life to 'act out' on the web...
However, if you are trying to sell your skills to generic 'clients' who don't have a lot of web-skills, I agree that they are quite often impressed by Flash.
'Security' hahahahahhahah - never mind screen grabs - if you're using Safari, check 'activity' window, find the *.swf file and double-click to download it.
Security - if anyone says that's what they're doing it for, likely they are even bigger nOObs than people who can't be bothered with it in the first place.
Flash is superb for what it was originally designed for - easy animation, and even better at what AS2 has allowed it to evolve into - interactive sites such as car companies, games etc.
It sucks when used for things that could be done much more efficiently through other means.
