Nah, as @StiHacka said it works well. A few of my riding buddies have this setup with Race Face N/W rings.

The chain isn't "wider" wider. Only the external width is (thinner plates), the inner width is the same between 8,9, 10 and 11sp chains IIRC. Not sure about 12sp, those things are lizardry wizardry.
