....to muslim extremists is from my home town.

Lynnwood Washington.

All over the news last night and this morning.

Even local Muslim leaders said when he started talking about training other muslims to fire rifles and calling himself aka Gun Fighter.....they distanced themselves. He bragged about being a "marksman"(Isn't that a title you get by passing a test in basic training or something?)

Question: Why just distance themselves, and not alert athorities to atleast make them aware of him?

He went to a school about 9 miles north of my HS and graduated 2 years after me. Wow. It is strange having something that close to you (Though I never knew him....or does it effect me directly)

Neighbors say his parents are very patriotic people and that he only converted to muslim while atttending Washington State University.

He was set to be deployed with his group shortly and his fellow guardsmen didn't look to happy about his activities.....

That is all I have from memory.

Probably just interesting only to me.....

FORT LEWIS, Wash. — A National Guardsman who stands accused of attempting to provide military data to Usama bin Laden's terror network has been arrested and charged with aiding the enemy.

Spc. Ryan G. Anderson (search), 26, signed on to extremist Internet chat rooms and tried to contact members of Al Qaeda (search), offering them information on U.S. military capabilities and weaponry, Defense officials said.

He is being charged with 'aiding the enemy by wrongfully attempting to communicate and give intelligence to the Al Qaeda' and was arrested Thursday.

Anderson's job with the armored brigade is referred to in military parlance as "19 kilo," or armored crewman. A member of the National Guard's 81st Armor Brigade, Anderson converted to Islam during the last five years, officials said.

Other military officials told Fox News that Anderson made some contacts on the Web that made officials suspicious enough to start watching him. A sting was assembled, with some of the investigators posing as terrorists online.

They communicated with Anderson in chat rooms to find out just how much he would be willing to reveal. Anderson, it appears, then tried to tell the agents how they might be successful in attacking U.S. armor in Iraq and provided information about "vulnerabilities" of equipment the U.S. Army was using in Iraq or is about to ship over with newly deployed troops.

The National Guard's 81st Armor Brigade (search), a 4,200-member unit set to depart for Iraq, is the biggest deployment for the Washington Army National Guard since World War II.

The brigade has been training at Fort Lewis since November. Eighty percent of the soldiers -- 3,200 -- are from Washington state, and 1,000 are from guard units in California and Minnesota.

It includes two tank battalions, a mechanized infantry battalion, engineers, support troops, artillery and an intelligence company.

Anderson was taken into custody without incident as part of a joint investigation by the Army, Justice Department and FBI. He was being held at the Fort Lewis Regional Corrections Facility near Tacoma.

Army Lt. Col. Stephen Barger declined to give any details on the arrest, and it was not immediately clear if Anderson had a lawyer.

Speaking on background, one Army official told Fox News that Anderson violated the disclosure oath he took when he joined the Army if he talked about his unit's upcoming deployment to Iraq. Another Army official simply described Anderson as "stupid," and what he did as "stupid."

Jack Roberts, a neighbor, said he talked to Anderson's wife, Erin, after federal agents left the couple's apartment Thursday.

"She was pretty damned shocked, as I was," Roberts told the Herald of Everett.

Washington State University spokeswoman Charleen Taylor said Anderson was a 2002 graduate with a degree in history. Anderson graduated from high school in Everett in 1995, the Herald reported, and at WSU studied military history with an emphasis on the Middle East.

In May 1998, when he was 20, Anderson was pounced on by Snohomish County sheriff's deputies as he carried a couple of rifles past a grade school near his home, the Herald reported. He was released quickly after authorities determined he had not broken any laws.

That incident happened when officials were particularly nervous about school safety, because it was just after 15-year-old Kip Kinkel killed two students and wounded more than 20 other people at his high school in Springfield, Ore. Kinkel also had killed his parents.

Anderson is the second Muslim soldier with Fort Lewis connections to be accused of wrongdoing related to the war on terror.

Capt. James Yee (search), 35, a former Fort Lewis chaplain, is accused of mishandling classified information from the U.S. prison for suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay. Yee ministered to Muslim prisoners there.

There were initial reports that Yee was being investigated as part of an espionage probe, but he was never charged with spying.

Fox News' Bret Baier, Ian McCaleb and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

What was to report?

I'm sure they didn't want to draw unnecessary attention to themselves at the time... putting them under permanent suspicion eventho they weren't doing anything wrong.

I know you didn't mean it this way, but you sounded like you were implying that all Muslims' are guilty, they should know it, and any time someone approaches 'em about something weird, they should report it to the authorities because they are the bad guys, so when someone makes them a strange offer, they should assume it's not strange, but bad and illegal.

Do they watch everyone in the guard? If not, then they were already watching the guy and were already suspicious.

When he is talking about training other young muslims to fight......um yeah, you report it.

How is that a 'strange' offer? Especially in these times....They knew enough to not deal with him. Now everyone knows that they knew and ignored it....like it would go away. *rhino shaking head* What looks better? Igoring it and hoping nothing happens, or informing the appropiate authorities and dealing with him? If I new someone threatening to kill another and there was reason to beleive he was serious...isn't it my duty to let someone know? What if I stay quiet? Maybe nothing will happen....or someones life might be saved.

Maybe they thought he was just some stupid young blowhard who was harmless but trying to impress easily impressionable people and with an overblown sense of his own importance.

It doesn't sem that credible that he was positioned to do much actual harm.

A fool who is probably now regretting being so stupid. Damn fool.

I sort of agree with you, but it is treason and he should be fully punished, fool or not.

Yup. He's a damn fool but his foolishness had the potential to cost lives and encouraged terrorism. He deserves everything he gets IMO. I'd baulk at execution though, as he seems to have been caught before he caused any real harm.

Treason it is!

They said he was trying to relay information about weak spots in the tanks he worked with.

In that case...give the tank crew ten minutes with him!

(Note - my original comment referred to how the Muslim community may have viewed him, he may well not have shared such damaging info with them.)

I will give you the not bright part (from above article):

In May 1998, when he was 20, Anderson was pounced on by Snohomish County sheriff's deputies as he carried a couple of rifles past a grade school near his home, the Herald reported. He was released quickly after authorities determined he had not broken any laws.

 Doesn't take brains to commit treason.....I guess.

They? Ha! Pronouns are a pain sometimes, eh?

I think the "they" Fluff was refering to was the muslims in town, not military sting people.

So there is no chance he was not refering to Muslims with his they?

Just a thought. (half-assed as it is :D ) He could have been though....or he could be letting everyone know what he is reported to have been leaking. But I think that was to the local community about the tanks....unless he was stupid enough to brag and not just offer to teach them how to fire rifles.....

I'm totally confused now! I'm not even sure whether you were referring to me but if you were, I was indeed referring to the muslims with my 'they'.

Hang the bastard, he's caused me confusion!

:D Yeah I pretty much munched that one. haha.

TECHNIRO MIGHT have been letting you know the info Mr Anderson is reported to have been trying to give to extremists. The "they" being the military*edit* OR news people...Istand corrected*/edit*.

I know you, FLUFF, were refering to the Muslim community who ignored him.

I was talking about (which was an abslute failure) LORDOPIE's commenting on how TECHNIRO was confused on what you, FLUFF, meant in your use of "they". I simply was saying TECHNIRO's "they" might have been different that your use, FLUFF, of "they".

I could probably make a flow chart. :D
