Your TV already will upscale. The only reason to get a DVD player that does it is that it will do it better. However, if you need a new DVD player for the connections or whatever then it isn't a bad feature to have.
I would steer clear of the blu ray / HD route for the time being.

Yeah, at least if you bought a console system, you'd have a useful piece of electronics if one of the formats goes the way of Beta Max.
PS3 = Blu-Ray by the way.
The Oppo DVD players are renown for their image quality. If you're gonna spend a bunch of money on a nice DVD player, that's the way to go. Kinda depends on what you want to spend in the long haul - I don't think I'm going to upgrade to any kind of HD until the HD DVD/Blu-Ray wars are decided, or the dual format players are in widespread use and are inexpensive.
There are quite a few dual players about to hit the market if they haven't already (blue ray/HD DVD). Some of them looked like they will have decent pricing, and some were astronomically priced. HD DVD has the porn end of things now as it is cheaper to produce, so that may end up being it's saving grace.
And HDMI won't provide a much better signal than component with a non HD signal. It will allow you to do audio to your TV with one cable, but then you lose the surround sound you'd want with flicks anyways, unless you have a fancy new amplifier with HDMI.
