A client just brought in a plastic object measuring about 3.5"x3.5"x1/8"

They claim it's a disk, so I thought it must be a mini-cd in the plastic case. I pried it open and there's a dark thin plastic disc in there, but it's obviously not a mini-CD.

I'm guessing that the plastic case wasn't a case to be opened?

The plastic case is just a storage box. Put the thin black disc into your CD-ROM, it'll work.

I tried that, nothing happened.

Put it on your desk, stare at it for a while and maybe poke it with your pencil, like you would if you were expecting it to explode.

Make sure that the client is in the room with you, when you do this.

Also whatever it is, make sure you give the data back to them on punch cards or something.
