I've starting pulling apart my old rigid bike, and I'm needing some help. First off, I've never tried to do any real wrenching on my bikes, so bear with me as I learn. Second, the bike is an old Diamondback Outlook (about 8-9 years old). I inherited the bike, so to speak, so I don't know much about it.

I'm going to turn it into a singlespeed, so I need to get the rings off. To do that, I'm under the impression that I need to remove the cranks - correct? So, how do I do that? there is a nut (that I removed) that seemed to hold the cranks on, but I couldn't budge them. I also can't seem to find a tool that fits the rivet things that hold the rings together. It's not a hex bolt like I originally thought.

Any tips? TIA.

here are a few pics so you can see what I'm working with...

You need a crank extractor to remove the crank, like a park ccp-2
You will also need another crank as yours is a riveted crank and is pretty much meant to be tossed when the chain rings wear out. You should be able to get a set of cranks with no chain rings fairly cheap as well as a cheap ring.
