You really risk deforming the cup if you do it any other way.

That being said, I've tapped mine out with a wooden dowel in the past with no damage.

Do you have a headset press? If you're taking them out, you'll need away to get them back in while keeping proper alignment. I've known people who just pound them in, but I also know people who have ruined their cups by doing so. Getting them in crooked can f*** up your cups, bearings, and head tube, not to mention affect your steering.

I agree, having the proper tools would be best. However, I've removed several headset cups by gently tapping them out, working my around the cup, with a large screw driver through the headtube and a hammer. I've always installed headsets (even a Chriss King) by placing a wooden block over the cup and gently tapping it into the headset with a hammer....just don't hit too hard and make sure the cup is all the way in, all around before installing the fork.
Hope this helps

If it is really an internal headset then you dont need a headset remover tool. You should be able to grab the bearings and pull them out with your hands. An internal headset isnt pressed into the bike like an external. It rests inside metal cups that are put in at the factory.
