Long time lurker here but looking for some peoples thoughts. I work at a shop in the North East and I'm looking at 2 jobs out west. One is in Ventura County CA and the other is near Reno. Anyone know what the cost of living is like in either place? Also how is the riding and general outdoors stuff in those areas. I know I'm gonna really have to get in better shape to deal with the hills in either area.

My family has lived in Ventura for many years, and the last I recall, the cost of living is a bit high, though the area is gorgeous. As for the Reno area, well, I live about 10 minutes south of Carson City, and the cost isn't as high as Ventura. Definate four seasons, Lake Tahoe, the ski areas, loads of biking to do, camping/fishing, all the stuff it sounds you'd like. Granted, I'm a bit partial to Reno. Where are looking at for work???

I grew up in Reno. Great town.

Its gotten a little heavy with chico based imports as of late, so the cost of living has gone up and the quality of people has taken a bit of a dive.

great riding, dirt jumping, skiing/boarding and living to be had there if you have the right tour guide however.

Who are you thinking of working for?

Go for the Reno job. Ventura is expensive to live in (the ghetto is cheap, but it blows) there are no decent trails in the entire county. Sure there are a few, but nothing worth riding on a regular basis. I've all but quit mt. biking since moving to Ventura, keep my mt. bikes at my parent's house so I can ride when I visit them, and just stick to the road. It's also over crowded, and the local scene sucks. Bunch of wannabe puk kids, Hell's Angels, and wannabe hippies, the bar scene blows, and most restaurants close at like 6:30 WTF? If the job is in Oxnard, bring ear-plugs as the Navy likes to fly jets really low at all hours of the night. Camarillo, and Thousand Oaks are cool if you make lots of money and you have no personality. Ojai is just strange, way too many psudo-hippy-really-a-yuppy types for my taste, but it is a hell of a lot closer to the aformentioned sh1tty trails.

To restate Reno is a cool little spot near some cool things, Ventura is teh suck.

There are a few companies in both areas, Veltec, Giant, and Patagonia. Guess its more Ventura, Thousand Oaks, Reno, and Carson city to be exact.

Ventura County has some great riding, its expensive and a little crowded.
