Hey guys,

I recently had to format my C drive. I transfered all my files (pics and documents) to my D drive which is my storage drive.

I formatted C drive, reinstalled XP pro, all updates and service packs.

I try to open up my pictures and some of them open, some of them won't show in any program (photoshop, IE, paint etc...). I had sent myself some pics from our laptop and they open fine on the laptop, but not on my desktop.

So I'm just wondering if there's any idea's to why I can't open some, as some open fine and others don't open at all. I have never had this problem happen before but it drives me crazy.

Any ideas?

mind you, they were all camera files transfered months to years ago from a digital camera, and they all worked before I did this. So I dunno what happened but I'd like to get them back :)

Is this consistant? That is, there are some files that just won't open at all, every time? Or is it random?

Are the pictures you emailed to the laptop, ones that would not open on the desktop?

Have you checked the file sizes to make sure they're reasonable?

all my pics were in one folder.......and some folders within that one all the pics open, and others won't. The file sizes are all normal sized (as far as I can tell). They all still hold that .jpg file extension.

I checked on the laptop, and they still won't open on there. Pics I transfered from the laptop to my desktop open fine. All of them. It's the one's that were on my desktop to begin with that won't open correctly.

It's random, if I hit tumbnail........some will show me, some will just stay looking like a picture. If I click one that just looks like the .jpg file it gives me an error in any pic viewing program I have.

Sounds like you've got some corrupted files there. I don't know of any way to get them back once they're corrupted - I assume, because you're concerned - that you have no backup?

Sorry, dude, it's likely that they're gone with no way to get them back. Just corrupted files. Make sure you have backups of your stuff, as all hard drives are susceptible to corruption.

You don't happen to have an nForce motherboard and a Maxtor hard drive, do you? They had an issue with corrupting each other.

Nope, it's an Abit board with a VIA chipset (1.7 athlon XP) and yes, they are maxtor drives. What's funny is that some work/some dont and they were all in the same folders......

Guess I'll cut my loss and just keep what I can, and maybe burn the ones that are retarded incase something comes up about repairing/fixing them.
