Well since Hollywood can't seem to produce anything worth the $9 it cost to see a movie nowadays....I have become really interested in documentaries. It doesn't really matter what the subject is as long as it's a good movie. I started about 2 months ago and so far I have seen...

When we were Kings
Hoop Dreams
Microcosmos
Darwin's Nightmare
March of the Penguins
Inconvenient Truth
Grizzly Man (sucked donkey balls!)
Who Killed the Electric Car
Murderball
Supersize Me
A crude Awakening
Paperclips
Lords of Dogtown
and all the Micheal Moore stuff...

anyone have any good movies to recommend?...D

Have you watched the Planet Earth series? Even better if you can watch it in high def.

Just amazing.

*thinks of all documentaryish movies seen recently*
Just saw Walk The Line. Pretty good. Lords of Dogtown was OK. That's all I've got for now.

FYI: HD DVD is dead. Blu-ray is the only format on the market now

yeah I'm trying to decide if I watch enough TV to justify buying a compatible one...my local Blockbuster has stopped carrying new HD DVD's...they're swapping everything over to Blue Ray...D

I got Helvetica in the top of my NF queu (or how ever the hell you spell it) but I am a typeface nerd. I will let you know if it is any good.

You check out the Buena Vista Social Club & make sure your stereo is hooked up to your DVD player.

Grizzly Man is another good one. Great movie about a crazy nut job who lives with Grizzlies & then gets eaten along with his GF. A great Werner Herzog film.

Check out Control Room. It is about the CR @ Al Jazeera near the outbreak of GW's vendetta.

La recently watched Jesus Camp. I couldn't. That $hit would just infuriate me.

Check out touching the void too. It is a great survival story about 2 guys climbing an un-climbed mountain in the Andes. The one dude is frikkin HARD CORE with a capital H & C.

Also Jazz by Ken Burns is great too. But you better ready to invest some time into .

Wht didn't you like Grizzly Man? I hated the dude but thought it was a good movie. Mostly because I was glad he got eaten & the scenery was spectacular.

Walk the Line was...MEH. IMHO.

well I was told it was about one mans plight to save the grizzly...then I rent it and it's about a complete dumb ass who's about 12 years old mentally...who gets eaten in the end...and they don't go into much about what he did to help the grizzly...D

Into the Wild was supposedly pretty good, but I couldn't bring myself to listen to Eddie Vedder for 2 hours, so I havn't seen it.

TN already recommended Jesus Camp and Control Room, both of which are worth watching.

Also might consider:
Bonhoeffer (good film about Bonhoeffer and his life)
The Fog of War (about Robert Macnamara)
Baghdad ER
This Film Is Not Yet Rated (about MPAA, very entertaining)

While we're on the subject of documentaries, two friends of mine have been promoting their own about a Cambodian refugees: www. newyearbaby.net My friends are the subject and the producer of the movie.

thanks..I have added it to my list...looks interesting...D
It was a lot better than I thought it would be. My wife likes to add docs to the queue and it has been hit or miss. But I must say a lot more hits than misses.

Choppertown was good, but I enjoy choppers and there is a funny/weird 10 or so minutes with Jason Jesse (skater from the 80's).

Nick Broomfield's work if you want to see where Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock received their stylistic influences from.
I particularly recommend "The Leader, His Driver and the Driver's Wife".

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but Microcosmos is pretty amazing. It's about insects and stuff, and it's shot beautifully, great great movie.
