Hey guys! I just hit some trails for the first time this weekend and borrowed my friends cheapo "FOX Racing" Pacifica full suspension bike...haha! It did the job, has disc brakes, but is a terrible bike for off road trails.

I am looking for a new bike that is reasonably priced (under $700 pre-owned) and found a '00 4 banger pristine condition, hardly used, however, its a XL 21" and would be too big for me i think. I am 5' 10" 170lbs do you think it would fit me? We negotiated down to $375 until I realized it was a 21. I loved this bike! :(

2nd on my list is a '99 4 banger. The owner never took it off road and only used it for exercising around his neighborhood (He's around my height but looks like 220+ lbs.) Is his weight going to reduce the lifespan of the shock components even though he only rode on pavement? This bike is also in pristine condition except for his front hydraulic caliper/brakes seizes when he pulls the lever and it will return back in about 14hrs. He said his local bike shop needs to replace the seals in the lever and that should do the trick. I noticed he had some continental tires on them that looked like non off road tires that I will have to replace. He originally asked for $600 and I got it down to $450.

From my research it seems that there are hardly any replacment parts for them, which is a huge downside and I am SOL if I break something, but for my budget and according to reviews its a great first bike that wont hurt my wallet. I also found a sweet deal for a '06 Specialized S-Works FSR for $1500, like new, all original parts and only used on the trail a few times. I would love to jump on that but I know its overkill for me.

What's your guys' opinion?

Thanks!
Kerry

The 4 bangers were sweet.

However, bikes don't age well. They lose their value faster than new cars.
Your prices are inline, but parts are hard to get. I can't even keep track of who owns Schwinn anymore.

So, either live with a bike that may break and you might just have to hang on the wall, or up your purchase price and buy something newer.

personally, id aim for a grand, with 1000 your options open up greatly, It might be more than you want to spend, but it will be well worth it. (better resale too)

^ what he said, a used Specialized Big Hit or even a Kona (yea I said it) might be a good option within your budget. Also with the old school geo of the Schwinn an XL will almost certainly feel too big.

what bikes do you guys ride?
most of the people on here, will tell you bikes that are WAY out of the price range you want to spend, most people on here have top of the line brand new stuff.

Spesh bighits
Kona bikes (in general)
Giant faith
Giant Glory (hit and miss)
older demo 9s (highly recommend)i have had 4 in my lifetime, and they are a super under-rated bike, also strongest bike ever and featured on modern marvels
trek session 10 might be down there.
iron horse will have some stuff, but being out of buisness-may want to stay away.

google isnt helping me out right now, but im 99.9% sure it was on modern marvels, they were raving about it being the strongest bike ever made. (i agree) and the headtube can take 7Gs before it bends, apparently you die around 3-4, so you know its good :D

they also were proud of the fact that it bent, rather than snapped. Its an old episode, so might not be the easiest to find, but it was there.

Haha, yeah I watched it right after I posted that. Kinda cool, kinda funny, I liked the part when they were "testing" the bike by hucking to slight up hill off the loading dock.

Hey Kerry,
4Bangers are sweet bikes, but only for trail use or if the one you have is completely hosed and not worth anything. There's a reasonable amount of collector value to them, so it's almost silly to consider buying one to abuse.

At your height, you should be looking for a 17" or 19", depending on your measurements. I'm 5'11" with a 32-33" inseam and a 23.5" top tube is perfect for me, which is a 19" schwinn frame....you may want to go a size smaller.

Good first bikes are trek, kona, specialized and rocky mountain. Those all hold up very well and don't cost an arm and a leg to buy. Iron horse is another good brand, as people are no longer buying them and resale is low...if you blow it up, you won't be out much, and you probably won't blow one up.

Here are a few from the classifieds that should fit you and are in the 500-1500 price range...no affiliation:

I don't know where you're located, but please try before you buy to make sure it fits and everything works. Good luck!

Also, hate to be a jerk, but can you send me any links to that 99 homegrown? I'm looking for one personally.

If any company decided to reproduce that bike it would be awesome. I loved my 01 straight six took it to Mt Snow and Platty. I would skip out now but it was nice back then
