Needed: The secret to installing shifters

Sorry, I searched, but I couldn't find anything helpful.

I am just finishing putting my Marin back together (first time it's been fully functional in 2.5 years!), somehow I got the cable in the rear shifter (Deore) but after messing with it for 15 minutes, I figured it's time to learn the secret, because i KNOW this isn't how it's done.

My problem lies in routing the shifter cable through the rapidfire unit. I took off the top peice, and when put in high gear I can see the little hole the cable goes through. But when I stick the cable in, there is no 'guide' to bring the cable around to where it has to come out - it just hits the corner and that's it.

How are you supposed to route the cable through?? I also have old Gripshifts that I am going to have to perform the same task with, so if anyone has a site with a good how-to on either or both, I will be very, very grateful!

Thanks in advance.

for rapidfires just make sure the shifter is shifted to the smallest ring or cog. That is, hit the finger trigger as many times as it takes to completely release the mechanism. The cable will thread through no problem.

Gripshift is trickier. I usually just solder the ends of the cables and then keep poking until it goes through... again, it should be shifted to the smallest ring/cog.

Yeah, GS sucks for this. I don't own a soldering iron so I have to use a brand new (uncut) cable when replacing one.

RF is pretty easy - see Ohio's instructions. Also, turn the barrel adjuster (the thing the screws in where the cable housing hits the shifter) so that the little slit in it lines up with the cable, which will allow you to run the cable out of the shifter properly.
edit - this works with the older ones; I don't use 9sp so the newest RF units I'm familiar with are the '98s. They might have changed the cable installation since then; if so, ignore my directions.

nevermind :o: turns out I really am a stupidhead.. umm i didn't take the bolt out tucked in beside the shift levers that allow you to just poke it thru

I was making an incredibly easy task much harder :D
