Here's the deal. My only computer (Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop) is about 7 years old now, and is DEFINITELY on it's way out.....using about 58 of the 60GB HD, very, very slow, lots of lagging, overheating and shutting down, etc. Given it's age, it was never a powerhouse to begin with going by today's standards/technology, and add to that 7 years of almost nonstop use on all the electrical components.........it's definitely time for something new.

Now, all I mainly use my laptop for is:

Por....erm.....internet
CD ripping/media playing (WMP and Winamp)
Microsoft Office (Excel and Word, mainly)
Adobe Acrobat/Reader (PDFs)
Zune Software
Basic picture/video storing and editing (no fancy chop/editing software, however)

No games, no downloading music/movies/vids/games, no crazy networking stuff.....really simple, low memory operations. However, I'd like the ability to run Solidworks efficiently in the future. Since I'm getting something new, I will most likely be getting something a lot more compact (this thing is a beast), so I would most likely take it on trips frequently.

Should I be looking into netbooks, or do I use it enough to justify getting a regular notebook? The size of the netbooks (~10" screen) is tempting, and after seeing the specs of some of the higher end ones ($4-500), they seem pretty damn decent. However, for another couple hundred, you can get a notebook that is on average double the capacity/performance of said netbooks.....but do I need it? Ideally I'd like to stay in the $3-400 range, but if need be I'd make the jump to $500 if it's worth it. I really don't feel like spending $700, as I'm trying to be somewhat reserved in my spending since I'm looking at buying a house.

The new MacBook Pro's are awesome... but for the price of a Macbook pro you can get an Alienware box... all Custom... super fast with about 1 terabyte HD's... and 8 gig ram.....

there are plenty of choices... good luck!

Is anyone actually reading what he is requesting? His budget is $300-500, not $1200+. I've never used netbooks or solidworks enough to say anything on them. If you are going to get a netbook I would think you would need something with more processing power and a larger screen. A 12" model with the nVidia Ion platform maybe? You can probably get a refurb Core 2 Duo laptop with much more processing power and a larger screen if you don't mind the extra weight.

Ironic that it's the Lounge thread that contains useful information and the Tech forum thread that has suggestions like tripling the budget. Usually the other way around.

I'd second what syadasti said in the Lounge thread - the business class Dell refurbs are excellent. For traveling, I'd lean towards the 14" laptops (actually, personally I like the 12-13" laptops) for size considerations. But maybe that extra inch will be good for Solidworks - just be aware that you currently won't take your laptop because it's too big. You don't want to end up in that same situation again.

A couple years ago I purchased a Dell Vostro 1500 from Dell Small Business for ~$570. The computer is completely stripped down which I preferred (I just DL'd Open Office for all my word processing needs). I'm running SW 08 on it without any problems, but this is merely for personal use. I'm not running any large assy's with complex surfaces etc, that would require massive amounts of processing or a higher end graphics card. For something like that you'd be best off with something from their XPS series.

Anyway here's the specs of my machine.

Have a Look at this.

You should be able to upgrade it from XP Home to XP Business. Not sure about running Solidworks.

I'd add another 1gig of memory.

This will probably be my next laptop. A full-sized keyboard, 12" screen, 6hr battery, and only weighs a little over 3 pounds. Portability and less size/weight for teh win.

Newegg has it for $489 until 9/30 - free shipping

Well, I'd say a netbook would be the obvious choice if it weren't for the Solidworks requirement, so that kinda kills the whole suggestion of netbooks...

If he has a 7 year old consumer P4 notebook, an Atom or ULV Core 2 Solo 12" netbook would probably be comparable and the latest netbooks have the nVidia Ion platform but I don't know if Solidworks has special driver requirements and it also depends on whether he wants to run the old version he's been using.

Obviously a dual core 14-15" notebook with 4x the memory and large screen would be much more snappy though.

I'm using a Netbook right now, and I love it. But I think I would become quickly frustrated if I did not have a desktop as well.

I do a lot of sys admin work which does not require a lot of power, but lots of open windows and plenty of context switching.

My home 23" monitor or my two dual 20"'s at work does the job for me, but I was slowed down plenty on my 10" netbook.

As for apps, I try to stay single threaded. I rarely open up two apps at the same time.

Plus I'm planning on installing OS/X to piss off the Apple freaks who think extra money means locked down O/S's.

Yup. Unless you will be using a legacy version of solidworks, a netbook won't cut it (chances are, a netbook isn't powerful enough for some of the legacy versions). For the price range you are in, you'll barely be at the minimum specs for current versions of SW.

Here's the current sys req's for SW (versions 2008, 2009, 2010):

-1 gig of ram minimum, 2 gigs recommended (very large assemblies will require upwards of 6-8 gigs of memory and a 64bit cpu)
-certified openGL GPU

From the Lounge thread:

So.........I wound up doing the logical thing when choosing a new computer by getting completely hammered and ordering the first computer that seemed right at that particular drunken moment.

I decided I won't really travel with it as much as I initially thought I might, so I threw size out of the equation. Wound up ordering this.....woke up the next morning hungover with the pickup slip printed and sitting on my desk. It's more than I planned on spending, but I usually keep computers for 5-6 years easily, so it more than pays for itself in the end.

So far I'm happy with it....despite being an HP (I've always been a Dell guy)....more than suits my needs.:thumb:

Up sh*t creek, without a paddle
Before heading out with my friends for a night of drunken debauchery, I used to always ask them if "1-click buy" was enabled on their ebay account. They'd usually look at me quizzically and start to ask why I was being dumb. Then about three words into a response, they'd stop, go to their computer and disable it. Usually got a free beer of two out of 'em...

so SS, what was the dumbest thing you 1cb'd?
I've never 1cb'd anything. Don't even have an ebay account to do so...

I just kept getting the blame for it...prolly cause we'd get into some drunken discussion in the cab ride home and my buddy would go online and try to find out the "truth" or "more info" and end up with 72 pallets of swedish fish being delivered to his 3rd story apartment.

True phone call (14 hours after my head hit my pillow):

"Dude!! Were we talking about exotic fish or something last night?"

"Exotic dancers, maybe...like why they're not called strippers anymore maybe? I really don't remember...why?"

"I just checked my ebay account to see if an auction I was bidding on was over...and I apparently bought 3 five pound containers of beluga caviar."

"Wow...throw on hell of a rager then!!"

"I can't afford 9 grand in fish eggs!!!"

"Oh...just tell him you were actually looking for seahorse caviar..."

*click*

Never did figure out how that ended up...

So, needless to say, I've since decided to be proactive.

Just because a person doesn't get drunk doesn't mean they don't drink (not sure if this is the case with Quo). I have a beer or glass of wine daily, but I don't get drunk daily. Now crabwalk down to the liquor store and get me some scotch.
I have not been drunk since December '08, and only drink beer.

I do enjoy a beer with dinner and a good buzz at social events; that's about it for me these days.

When I turned 18, I stayed drunk for a week. that cured me of ever being a drunk. I found out that I don't like the feeling of being drunk. I do drink, just no that much any more.
I celebrated the end of my Junior year in college by blacking out 19 nights in a row. It didn't cure me of much.
