Watcha think?

I am at a loss.

I like the smaller size and cost but they all seem so completely close to each other. Hard to figure out which one is worth it.

So far:
Asus 1000HE
Lenovo S10
Acer Aspire One AOD150

I'm also looking at a Dell 13". (maybe Vostro?)

Needs:
Webcam (1.3mp preferred)
Decent battery life
1gb ram or better (or at least room for it)

Enlighten me.

1000HE looks like a good bet if you want a netbook but you could get a real notebook with lots more processing power for not much more only it won't be quite as light. A vostro or similar like you mentioned - a refurb if you want cheap...

Vostro 1310 Refurb, Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 3GB RAM, 160 GB 7200 RPM, DVDRW, Intel a/g Wifi, Bluetooth, Vista Business (allows legal downgrade to XP Pro) $449

They have ones with integrated webcam, but how often are you going to use it and the lens is so small, this one is very portable and works well (in Ubuntu also) about $40 shipped - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/487099-REG/Logitech_960_000043_QuickCam_Deluxe_for_Notebooks.html

Or if you must have integrated - slower but larger HDD, slower CPU, no bluetooth and cheaper wifi chipset but has 9 cell battery instead of 4 cell:

Battery life is the key. Doesn't the Asus claim over 9 hours of battery life? Be hard to go past if it's true.

Its key but that claim is not honest. The Vostro 1310 with the 9 cell battery in power saving mode (you'll still have much more processing power) you'll still have comparable real world usage times - over 5 hours - but the 1000HE is 3.25 lbs vs 1310 with 9 cell at 4.81 lbs. When you need to get real work done you can use full performance mode and you'll still have 4.5 hrs or if you don't have any work to do you could watch a DVD that runs over 3 hours long before the battery gives out.

I played with the Lenovo at Fry's and was very impressed with the design/build quality compared to the other netbooks on the shelf, but I read reviews that said it had craptastic battery life.

I run a Aspire One with 1.5GB of RAM and 8GBSSD with an 8GB slot. I run the normal Linpus OS and not the default crap. It's great for single tasks, but can really hang when trying to do more than 2 or 3 things.

The HP Mini 9 with Ubuntu is a ton nicer, but it's nearly twice what I paid for my One. I might get one this summer, though.

<edit> I get maybe an hour out of the default battery. But I do a lot more than just watch porn, too.

I like the lenovo quite a bit but like you im torn between a netbook and a smaller notebook. To me the power you can get in a 12" notebook for me out weighs the advantages of a netbook especially if you can find a deal. Ive decided to wait until win 7 finally drops to make my decision.

I might forget the netbook altogether now in favor of my new phone. (at least for traveling)

So far I've installed:

Google Maps
Nokia Email
Gmail mobile
Fring
Opera Mini
Youtube mobile
Skyfire (which kinda sucks)
Joikuspot Light (which fvcking ROCKS)
Sportstracker (which fvcking ROCKS)
S60 Internet Radio
ImiChat (2-way video chat for S60 phones)

With all the above plus the stock browser and other apps it does just about everything I need. I can even do simple edits on office docs.

Bonus - I installed an app called X-Plore which let's you dig into system files to uninstall all the AT&T bloatware. No more demo apps. Works with .zip archives as well.

I just liked the solid state design of the One. It fits easy into my tank bag on the moto and off I go.
