im looking into getting a new bike. I want a complete possibly with gears on the back end. The most i want to spend is about $800. I was looking into a p. bike from specialized. any other suggestions???

pretty much every reasonably large bike company makes a bike like you are looking for. a personal favorite of mine is the giant stp. i'm not sure about the price, but the geo is spot on. the specialized p.2 is pretty nice as well, but there are a lot of other options that could be potentially cheaper. kona in particular makes nice budget hardtails. it's always good to be able to test ride, so see what local shops carry and take some test rides to see what frame style suits you best.
You might want to consider buying used, this gets you a lot more for your money.
I'll have to 2nd the STP! I love the way mine rides.
