Ok...my boss said I could have a new box. So I got my new machine set up and IT "ghosted" their image on it etc and etc. I have admin rights because I need to be able to test ptoential software that our reps might use...

BUT when IT installed XP Pro on my machine they somehow turned off the screensaver function and the ability to add my own desktop images. There aren't any screensavers installed and the canned desktops are blah. Any ideas how to get around this? TIA.

You have admin rights but can't set your desktop?

Canned desktops plural? That means you can choose your desktop? So you have access to the Desktop tab of the Display Properties?

If that's the case, just drop whatever desktops you want into the My Pictures folder under My Documents. They will show up in that list. If, for some reason, they don't show up, save them as .bmp files and put them in there.

As for not having any screen savers installed, you have access to the Screen Saver tab, right? There's just no screen savers listed in the drop down box? What screensaver do you want?

My thoughts exactly. I've never seen this before.

I already tried what you have suggested. I can browse to the image that I want to use for my dektop and select it, but it will not display. I didn't have any problems with prior box. I can select the standard MS ones that were loaded on my machine.

Under the screensavers tab I can navigate to the tab but I cannot access any of the options...they are all grayed out.

I asked the tech about this and he said they've locked those out because of people abusing those functions. I guess that means that the old lady admin assistants are DL new desktops and screensavers and junking their computers up. He said that he'd have to get permission from the network admins to activate these two features.

They're somehow disabled in the registry??? Color me clueless.

Thanks! The group policy editor worked. I had to dig around a bit, but I got it.

edit: I'd throw some rep your way...I have to spread it around some first.
