allright guys, first off, I apologize for sounding like a noob but I am when it comes to dirtjumps. Long story short, a buddy and I will be building dirt jumps on his property. I plan on using red clay. Now, here's where I need tips: what do you use for the base so the clay isn't wasted? Logs, gravel, etc.? Also, what would be a good height and distance for the jumps? And lastly, pics of examples are greatly appreciated!

I agree w/ demo9 to a point. If you are pretty certain where stuff is going to end up some logs could be used at the base of the landing. Lips I like to use all dirt but it doesn't need to be all clay- in a perfect world yes, but it would take me a ton longer to get it done that way.

If you can get a skidsteer into the property and it's pretty open I'd scrape a foot or 2 down and use that top layer dirt as the base. Then get a the clay and use it as a top layer. We've gotten away w/ 6" or so but a good foot or 2 would be best.

Good height and distance is hard to determine - and varies per spot and style of the builder. I typically go 2 shovels/10 ft +/- a couple feet. 5' tall feel great but I've built shorter and some slightly taller. Read those links and it should give you a good start. O yeah, 20' from top of landing to the top of the next lip should be the minimum no matter what the gap size is (<10' gap) But again this is dependent on terrain and pitch.

BTW, what part of Miami are you guys? I'm going to be down in Key Largo after Xmas and hoping to get a ride at Markham or Oleta. Also do you know of www.freeridesouth.com? Might be some people on there that would help dig or give direction.

i agree with don. a 10 ft. plus or minus 2 feet lip to lip gap is a good rule of thumb.

All three of these jumps are between 10 and 11 feet lip to lip:

plus, the little double roller you see on the left is about 18" tall and also about a 10 foot gap:

so the point is you can pick a distance anywhere between 8 and 12 feet and make a lot of your gaps that distance even if some of them are taller jumps than others. the distance you can clear has more to do with your speed.

this jump is more like 16' ft. lip to lip. you gotta have good pumping skills to clear this.

hey Don, thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I ride Markham about three times a week and Oleta about once a week. If you can swing this way, I definitely recomend you ride these two trails. I check out freeridesouth occaisonally, and will probably post up sometime today. thanks again. BTW, when you geo to the Keys, if you like fishing, try out a charter by the name of "knee deep charters" (fishmekeywest.com). I've gone there a few times and always catch the limit.

ant - yeah, I just saw some pic on freeridesouth and a couple jumps that were added at Markham. I'll be hoping to check them out when I'm down for Xmas. It's a bummer that QW got hit by that storm a few years ago. The jumps they had setup there were really fun.

Thanks for the tip on fishing. We stay at Ocean Reef and I've been going out on the flats when we go down - the deep sea stuff makes me too sea sick, haha.
