I just got into mountain biking about a year ago. right now i have a specialized hard rock. it isnt anything special but it works for me. plus i dont have that much money to spend on a new bike. anyway ive been looking to get a 9-speed drive train instead of the 8-speed i have now but dont want to spend too much money. i have been looking at getting shimano deore cassette, chain, shifters, and deore xt derailleurs. do you think that would be a good idea? i only ride over the weekend for a few hours. also would it be better to install it myself or should i have a pro do it? any adivce would be great.

Don't upgrade your driveterrain because it is not worth it. Save your money and buy a new bike. A lot of people have upgraded their old bikes when they could have bought a new complete bike for the price they paid in parts. With a new bike you'll have a better frame, better front shock and better wheels as well.

Take your ride to the bike shop to have work done. I've seen too many cases where people don't know what they are doing and have to spend even more money to fix the mistakes they have made.

thanks for the help. you along with some others that i know have given me the same advice. i guess it is better to buy a new bike for like $500 or so instead of adding $100+ worth of components on a $300 bike. i think for now i will just save up my money.

I agree with CF.

And if you were to buy (AND INSALL) and the new drivetrain you spoke of it would be more like $200 or more.

Save and buy a new rig. I'd recommend spending around $800-$1100. At that price point for hardtails, you get a lot of big upgrades over the lower priced bikes (disc brakes, a fork with damping and adjustments, lighter frame, better wheels etc).

i just took my bike in to get it tuned up today. turns out i had a free tune up when i bought the bike so i didnt have to pay anything. i think for now my hardrock will be fine while i get build up my skills. once i get enough money i will probably go for something like a rockhopper pro disc, which is around $900.
