Doing a cable change last night. Picked up some new brake cable, housing and ferules. The ferules had very tiny rubber seals inserted on the leading end. Seems like a good idea to keep gunk out of the housing, but they were so friggin tight on the cable that the brake wouldn't return. Had to pry them out. Haven't encountered these little guys before. Seems like a good idea, but I must be missing something?

Those aren't really new. Old Shimano road and "xtr" ferrules have had those for a long time, and they work pretty well. Not as well as a Gore or Avid set-up, though. Motionboy hit the deal, though: you gotta use the ferrule designed for your cable diameter, or the o-ring will bind.

that must be it. I must have gotten ferules sized for shifter, not brake cable diameter (it's not the type with the tube). Thanks for the input!
