I have a 2004 iron horse sgs pro freeride. I'd like to make it more of a downhill bike and possibly worthy of racing in beginner/sport class. I don't know if I should just upgrade the fork. Right now it has a sherman breakout with 6" of TPC travel. Should I replace it with say a marzocchi 888 or a sherman slider. Or should i just wait it out with the bike i have now and purchase a new bike?

Dude, it's already worthy of DH in Beginner/sport racing.

The better question is where are you gonna race with Summit gone? Fontana? Your bike is fine for Fontana. If you are making he drive to Northstar or Mammoth to race then a bigger fork/bike might be needed.

Until then, rock what you got.
