if your in an area with high res data you can get in and see fine detail. Big citys obviously have the most imagry. To get the sat images, click the sattilite link in the upper right corner. Pan and zoom from there....

http://www.terraserver.microsoft.com is better. When you're finding an aerial photo, click on "urban areas". It'll get you much closer in. Those things are so much fun to play with.

Google's maps are better to get to your location, IMO.

It is interesting as it looks like they both bought the same map or satellite photos taken around the same time because when I look up my address, my townhome is not there on either map. Construction began on my place about 3 years ago and both photos show an empty lot.

Yea, the Google one is def. a couple years old. A subdivision that is being built right next to mine isn't even started yet and that was about 3 yrs ago.
