Hotness. If I didn't already own/love my Chameleon, I would definitely give that one a shot.

Let us know how it rolls.
You just bought a Chameleon to be trendy.
You could have bought another bike for less, but with more features.
I see Santa Cruz's giant marketing machine has hooked another sucker.

Ha, just to go along with the thread. :D

My best riding buddy has had a Chameleon for 5 years now.
I have owned 3 different FS trail bikes in that time, and he keeps on punishing the same hardtail. He recently said, I need to replace it, but I don't really want anything else. How often do you hear that in the MTB world? :thumb:

Well some people like myself like to try different things. Most of the frames I've owned since 1989 were good bikes, but that didn't stop me from having 26 different frames and over a dozen brands (Over 40% of them HTs).

The most popular brands weren't always the best bikes just as the Apple isn't the best DAP maker, just the most popular.

In any marketplace the most popular solution fills most of their needs, but isn't the best solution available.

Yup, it's a great ride. I got my first one in '01. Loved it. It got stolen. I tried a bunch of other bikes; most were more expensive. Didn't like them nearly as much. Finally just bought another chameleon last fall.

The sovereign looks awefully similar in geo, and you've got to love Evil and steel. But why bother? I love the chameleon.

Heheh. I'm going to keep harping on this...

You are not a mass-market bike consumer. Neither am I. Mass market bikes are closer to the $600 complete range, and within that range, I think you will find that the most popular bikes are pretty well suited to the prioirities of the general consumer.

At our end of the bike market, we're "extreme" users. We're a small niche. We have very different priorities and behavior than the rest of the market. You will see marketing effects, but you'll also see a lot of very short-lived companies or product lines. Look at any company/product line with longevity, and generally you'll see very good delivery of functionality in-line with demand.

I never said I was a mass-market consumer of anything. Thats why I don't have average mainstream products. I can tell the difference and most popular does not cut it...

The common consumer picks up an iPod and can almost immediately figure out how to play songs. The Rio's interface is good but it's not as good.

now that i've actually spent a decent amount of time w/ an iPod, i can w/ some certainty that Rio's interface and how it deals w/ accessing songs and playlists is far superior to the iPod.

for instance, the Rio DJ function has several selections which allow you to choose songs based on various attritbutes, the most important to me of which is when you last played it. this keeps yr content fresh, esp if you have a ton of songs (ie >3K) on a machine.

when you play all the songs in random order, you can navigate around and do stuff, turn off the machine, etc and this random playlist is still preserved. i haven't found that to be the case on the iPod.

the iPod does have a couple of neat things though; i like the color screen and ability to load in album artwork, even though it's small, and the "name that tune" game is kinda fun too.

yeah, sorting by last played isn't directly accessible on the iPod. however, you can (and i do) make "smart playlists" in iTunes sorted by that, or with a cutoff of songs not played in 6 mo, 1 yr, etc.

I'm in a place called vertigo........Hello, Hello.

Can we get away from the techno patent battle and get back to talking about how cool this thing is?

Goodbye Rio Carbo, Hello Nano. Nano.

Its just another flash player. Flash players have been around for longer than HDD based players...

Needs to be at least 1/2" thick to be ergnomically correct - too thin...

Screen is too small for viewing anything but very simple photos, text, and icons.

At least they realized this time flash players need a screen and proper navigation :p

Chameleon is a great bike - the only funky thing was the disc brake mount and they fixed it in the new version...

It's thin, elegant, simple, and sterile; quintessentially apple.

In terms of size v. features, this model has just slain all of the flash competition (and most of the hard-disk competition) apple has.
The volume of the nano is about 1.5 cubic inches with a thickness of less than 7mm. These figures along with the color screen and extras significantly raises the standard for what a flash player should be. Also, because of the design feat Cupertino has pulled off, it may be some time before another company can deliver a competitor that even comes close.

It's going to sell like crazy. :thumb:

I was refering to the BS encryption that prevents me from using the music that I bought legally in a legal form. iPod is the only music player that doesn't support this incryption.

I misspoke, it's not Common. The artist is slipping my mind....

The truth about Apple's "revolutionary" products, no hype or Apple marketing savvy included...

Salon.com said:
There is, of course, something to be abhorred about incrementalism. One of my office mates says she wishes Apple would stop making devices that are each just 5 percent better than the last one, all while pretending that each new thing will change life on earth as we know it. After all, the iPod Mini, the Shuffle, and now the Nano are just all variations on the same theme -- they play music. Will Apple ever create anything that does anything else? Maybe its time Kanye West had a chat with Jobs about the importance of taking a risk that could imperil a career.
Sounds like the bike industry - add a small feature or increase here or there and act like its going to change everything only their hype isn't quite as convincing as Apple's :p

hmm? i don't know what you're talking about here. please explain.

and, yes, they are going to sell like hotcakes. i stopped by the local apple store today to see if they had display models, and it was mentioned that they're getting about 100 calls per _hour_ about the nano... this all at one apple store, albeit one near a very large state university.

It's getting harder and harder to continue my OG-hardcore-ipodder ways. I've still got my 5gb gen. 2 iPod, always a curiosity in my classes. "Is that the new 80gb model? Does it have a case on it? OMG the wheel actually moves!!!" I'm proud of my brick of an iPod, still running strong after a new battery.

Holy crap! I had one exactly like that. I think it might still be at my folks house. That thing rocked, 8" speakers! :D

i hate to do this, but i have to pass on a good deal when i come across one.

earlier i mentioned that i got an iPod Shuffle for $19 NIB. well, if you don't mind buying through eBay, and you'd like a cheap mp3 player, may i suggest this promotion: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5807658368&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_ReBay_Pr4_PcY_BIN_IT

mine came today. it was legit. the seller responds pretty quickly (besides the automated responses) to questions. it is possible to make money, and still get the Shuffle. i would have, but got anxious, and ended up losing $19. actually, i could still turn it into a profit, but i don't want to risk it. i'm going to be putting my Shuffle on ebay, and using some coins i rolled and money from stuff sold to get me a Nano.

--edit--

on the ad, it says "total cost" is $50, but that's not quite true. if you end up not losing any money and coming out even, total cost is $0. if you bet the $50 and wind up with $250, well then you just got paid $200. if you bet $50 and lose it all, then the total cost is $50.

with the money i still had in my account, i played at the casino a little more. in the end, the Shuffle only cost me a total of $15. sweet-ass deal, if you ask me.

Bro, you love to look down your nose at all these iPod owners... thinking they're all fashion-conscious lemmings. You've done it in every previous iPod thread I've seen as well.

But you're as much a lemming in your own group of tech-weenie early-adopters. All this added functionality that you think is so valuable is useless or even counter-productive for the majority of the population. No one wants or needs all those features, few care about the sound quality, and most are confused by anything but the simplest GUIs. Simplicity and smart selection of only the essential features IS functionality. Small size IS functionality. And even, gasp, fashion, IS functionality. You're blind if you don't recognize that... since it's a factor for every electronic device in existence.

Snaps in half? And you know this from, uh, a couple of online picture about a product that isn't even in consumer hands yet? How many broken Shuffles or similar have you heard about? It shouldn't be any less robust than all the other SS players.

I know you love to hate Apple. Get over it. They own the market because they do it better than everyone else. When someone else starts doing it better (INCLUDING the fashion part) they'll soon win their fair share of the market.

i know it's not the place to sell things, but it's a thread devoted to Nanos, so why not? though, i seem to remember you selling your caps here, in a thread you stated yourself.

the case doesn't suck at all. i thought i'd be a good second case, but it's not. it's a good 1-and-only case. iLounge gave it an "A - Highly Recommended"...i gave it an 8, mainly cause of the price and the way it (like other silicone cases) picks up lint.
