HI all

Back again..the "ping" sound of my new wheels seems to have gone away (seem to be breaking in) so thanks to all who gave me their advice, BUT new problem........ I just rode today (about 2 hours) got back to the parking lot, gave the ol; back wheel a spin b/c I was hearing sounds that sounded like trouble. Spun the back wheel and heard a god-awlful grinding in the freewheel/cassette area. Thought it might be the bearings, but sounds more like cassette/freewheel area. I only have approx. 50km on these and my mechanic skills are less than desirable......For fear of sounding like an idiot (I always sound like one) any ideas as to the problem before I take them to a real mechanic...or should \i send them back? (trying to avoid this as wheels came from California and I'm in Canada (many$$$$$ to ship)
again any advice would be appreciated.....
Thanks In advance

set up: Mavic 717 w/xt hub, xt cassette 9 speed) DT spokes

Might not sound helpful, but did you make sure something didn't get wound tight up against the freehub/hub body interface under the cassette?

Does the cassette spin freely off the bike without making noise? Is the cassette tight? Does the hub spin freely off the bike without making noise?

Well, this is not going to be an easy fix for you.

FYI, there are bearings inside your hub shell and your freehub, but I have never heard a peep from the bearings, even if they were frozen from rust.

At this point, you don't have the knowledge to resolve this.

It is more likely the adjustment of your rear derailleur, but it could be a bent cog, thread caught under the cassette, or a few other things.

You should seek out a better mechanic to fix this.

BTW, this is why you should go to your local shop. They would have charged you about $100 more in parts and $100 in labor, but look how much time and money you have spent.

I took off the cassette and its definately in the free wheel. I will rotate, but sticks in a certain position. It will turn past this spot (with enough force), but will stick in the same place. I have emailed the company and am waiting a reply. Thanks for the suggestions.
I try to support local shops, but the closest one is over an hour and a half away with decent x-country over 45 minutes away. The Canadian prairies forces one to fend for themselves sometimes..

50k and a new freehub? It's time to take a trip to a good shop, it will definitely be worth it. You're looking at a $45 USD replacement on an XT quality freehub body. I think it's worth looking at why you need a new freehub after only 50k. Do you wash your bike a lot? If so, never spray anything that moves with a hose, use a sponge or brush.
