I recently bought a new wheelset. I have ridden approx 30km on them. Occationally I will hear and feel a low quick "ting" somewhere in the back wheel when under load. Not always, but once every minute or two....It almost sounds like someone hit a tuning fork off one of my rotors,, ( i know sounds dumb) I have no idea what is making the sound. Spokes, nipples, maybe i tightened the cassette too much (if possible) I'm a "new " mechanic at best as my friend usually took care of my ride

any ideas would be appreciated

here is my set up:
Mavic 717 Disc Custom
Rear Wheel - Shimano XT 6-bolt Black Rim Options - Black Spoke Options - DT Champion 2.0 Black

It's just the spokes breaking in so to speak. The are quite tight when they leave the factory and you are just breaking them in. (Keeping it literally here)

There is nothing to worry about.

Were they machine or hand built?

Is it only when on your inside rear cog? Check to see if that if under load the spokes are flexing into the derailleur cage edge.

Yeah, every minute or two, still breaking in.

The spokes are probably twisted from building. When they are stressed hard while riding the tension comes down sufficiently that they unwind and go ping when that happens. It shouldn't happen though because there are simple ways to take the wind out and that should happen before you ride them because they may go out of true a bit. Not that big deal though and when I am lazy I sometimes simply ride down the lane and lean the bike over to one side and sort of pressure it. Then do the other side. Then I do an on the bike check of the trueness. If it's close enough off I go.

How is the spoke tension? Hand built wheels will need a retension after a ride or two sometimes. I agree with sghost (even though he was kind of an ass about it) that this isn't a bedding in issue if it happens frequently and continues past the first two rides or so.

Is your skewer tight? You may be getting some flex there causing the rotor to ping against the caliper. It may also be as simple as your brake needs to be realigned. So check your QR, check your brakes, and get your wheels brought back to tension.
