My friend has a HUGE interest in designing and trying to manufacturer gravity components. He has designed a chainguide from plexi glass.. Check it out. For a 15 year old kid, he is on the right track. I will be repping them for him to see the durability. Hopefully they hold upsummers productions.jpg

What r the advantages of plexiglass? Isnt lexan more impact resistant? I will be the a$$hole and say that there isnt anything innovative about that chainguide comparing to current offerings.
He might start making them from Lexan. Not sure. Didn't say there really were any advantages. Just trying to show it off. I will try them, knock on wood I dont break them. Hes my buddy, so i will support him with it. I give him props for trying to get his idea of the ground. he claims its light and durable and wears slowly
For $10 each, you cant beat it

So he just made his own straitline out of a different substance. Cool that he saved money...

Edit: I think people don't like the title that it's a prototype. Prototype gives off the impression it's probably going to be produced by a company soon. If you just said homemade chain guide, people probably wouldn't give you a hard time

There isn't anything new or advances in technology! just showing the creativity of somebody... For $10 you cant beat it. He is just being intuitive. He has some talent. So I figured I would show off his first thing

I thought you were joking and it was made of wood on the guide pieces lol.
Didn't realize it was real, good job I think. :thumb:

I bought a e-13 guide off a guy used for $10.
Thanks for the support:thumb:
Ya, when my buddy sent me the original picture I thought it was wood, but ya made of plexi
I think its good for a 15year old kid with a wholesaw and some plexi glass. Just shows the innovation of what could be coming up in the future generation

What's the point of being innovative when MRP will just steal it? ;) I think the kid did a great job.

He has just posted it on pinkbike so how long did he have it? I have him on pb but as I have told him before. He should get a cad program. Hell even a free one. Drawin on paper will teach him nothing about design. Also getting a student license on a proper cad program or getting it from a certain sweedish site isn't that hard either ;)

Ya, maybe about a week he has had these. I just found out about them. I knew he was trying to make some, but didnt know he actually was going to.
and Hell, stealing software is harder said then done.. anyone can do it with a keygen:D
And youtube....
but, ya a CAD would teach him alot. I am in CAD 1 in school. Really makes life easier. turn the ortho on and straight lines are easy to make

There are many free CAD programs(easy cad for example). I'm not going to advocate piracy since it is super easy to get a student license and up to that time you can learn on free programs but it is still doable if you need to learn.

dont get me wrong, i appreciate being 15 and tracing something on paper than cutting it out of a sheet of plastic, but i fail to see how this is worth 10 dollars, this looks like ****,and i doubt has the same thickness and specs as it should-and im not even talking performance

I'm thinking about tracing my frame and cutting it out of cardboard. Anyone interested in repping it for me?

My prototype will have the similar lines to the real thing but will be made out of something lighter and cheaper

Paper towel rolls?[/QUOTE]

No, I'm saving those for my prototype handlebars. If I wrap enough Christmas gifts the bars will be available in 44 inch widths

If that really is made of plexiglass and not lexan it is going to broken the momnet it hits the trail.

I've made full lexan guide plates and they work great but one time I grabbed a sheet of plexi and made one out of that and realized when I went for a ride and my guide shattered with in 10 minuntes.

Same here- mine shattered when I tightened the bolts. Decided that spending money on the guide was worth it, because making one right takes more work than it looks like!

i tried it once as well, the guide didn't even last long enough to take the bike out of the stand. let alone actually ride the trails with it...

not trying to piss o the kids parade, but a lot of us have already tried this and there is a reason there are no plexiglass guides...
I agree- if the kid is motivated enough (which it looks like he is) he'll find the right materials and through some testing, make it happen. Everyone has to start somewhere. I have a job now, and better things to do, so I gave up and paid the cash.

I designed and cut mine out of a thin steel plate. It is as light, I think lighter than the 5mm thick aluminum ones. You also get better clearance for your chain. 1 1/2 year with no issues at all.
