I am just starting to do downhill and in need of some knee protection. Right now I have lizard skin shin guards that don't protect my knees. I was eithier thinking of buying some 661 knee guards or getting knee shin pads that offer knee protection. Which would be the better choice and be least expensive.

I would suggest knee-shin combos - they will stay in place better. I currently have 661 Race knee-shins and they stay in place very well and I forget that I am even wearing them after about 5 minutes of riding. I have heard nothing but raves about the raceface/roach FR knee-shins, but I haven't tried them out myself.

I had Fox Knee/Shin Combo pads for the last two years. This summer I bought a set of Roach FR Knee-Shin guards and they are much better. They don't protect the back of your leg from the pedal spinning around and biting your calf muscle, but they are very light. They are made of a mesh like material that breathes really well. They stay in place on my legs better than the fox's did and my legs stay cool all day. The front protection is pretty good too. I can see some big gouges in the front pads of my Roach pads that would have been bad news if I had not been wearing them.

661 stuff is pretty much all good. I use Dainese Viking bibs for DH and they are awesome. Not the highest level of protection, but good enough and really easy to move in. You might want to go the moto pad/knee warmer route. I think I might try that this year to get a little better mobility.

I have some Roach Rally FRs, they're good in that they don't slip at all (only shinnie I've ever tried that really does stay put) and protect very well, but they're falling apart at 1yr old.

I like the Roach DH but man they rubbed me raw on the side of my knees. Now I wear knee warmers under them and they fit oh so well. I love em.
