is that the sigma 70-200 f/2.8? nice one. loads cheaper than the nikkor or canon-branded lenses, very close in performance. at least that's the story line i've heard.

Yep. I didn't want to spend $1600 for the Nikon 70-200 because I'm going to be using this mostly for stuff with moving subjects. VR wasn't worth that much extra to me, and the Nikon 80-200 doesn't have AF-S, so the Sigma seemed like a perfect fit. I can't wait to play with it for a while.

Update:

Half the weight, little less reach, about as sharp at 150mm 2.8 as the 70-200 was at 160-170mm 2.8.

I'm hanging onto this one. The 70-200 went back. Nice lens, but between the size and saving $200, I'm plenty happy.
