Had you parked 1/2 on 1/2 off the red car next to you it would have been a way cooler pic.

Let us know how the Firestones hold up.

I am driving on 265-70 R16 BFG Mud's at the moment and daaaaaaaaanm, they are quite, stay ballanced and hook up woderfully in the gumboux mud we have around here...

Oh, for the record, Goodyear MTR's suck ass... unless you use them exclusivily on something that only drives off road.

Will do. The BFGs are the old standby - I just wanted something different, and these were cheaper. Plus, I've had very good luck with bridgestone/firestone on my 4Runner, so I have a bit of loyalty to them.

And yes, MT/Rs do suck, almost regardless. They are bad in the mud, wear fast, and can be a pain in the arse to balance. They are a good rock tire and that's about it.

Have you got to use them in mud yet?
Not yet. They've only been on for a few hours. On my lunch I ran up to the new house to check things out. Like any construction zone, there was a lot of dirt up there, and with all the rain we've had this week, it was pretty soft. So they did see some dirt/mud, but not real mud.

And my being at the house is a perfect segway to...

Oh and one other thing slightly off topic, how is your house?
coming along, slow but sure. They are supposedly laying carpet today, but they were no where to be found when I was there. They are still working on the tile in the foyer and bathroom. Most of the kitchen cabinets are in, which is very cool.

A couple of rooms are starting to look like rooms (carpeted, painted, trimmed, etc.) and not like a disaster zone of wallboard, plywood and nails.

They also have started grading the lot and getting the driveway ready for blacktop. They made a lot of progress last week, but still have a ways to go. Damn sub contractors keep going MIA on us, hence all the delays.

Hopefully the end of the month we'll be in - how many times have I said "Hopefully we'll be in by..."? :dead:

As well as could be expected. It turned out to be half vacation and half family reunion. The family stuff went well considering, and the vacation was good.

Apparently there is some good biking out there, because there were bike shops on every corner. I set out with the intention of only buying a t-shirt (if you remember, the one I saw in Jim Thorpe - Singletrack Mind). As it turns out, I couldn't find it, but I bought a pair of sunglasses with interchangable lenses to keep junk out of my eyes and a jersey instead. Both were things I really wanted, but way too expensive for my frugal ass. But I bought them anyways... it was vacation, and my attitude was "what the hell?!"

Oakley half jackets. I'm a big oakley fan, and I've had my eye on them for a while. I got gold polarized lenses with the frames, going to buy clear lenses too, and perhaps some black mirrored lenses too.

The colors aren't very accurate, but you get the idea...

And the jersey... no, that's not me.

I'm really surprised how much I like the shades for every day use since I got them as biking/kayaking glasses. The fact that I could spend $35 for new lenses rather than $150 for new sunglasses is very appealing. The gold polarized lenses work really well in almost any lighting condition. They take away a lot of glare, and the the gold lens enhanses contrast making everything look clearer than they normally do. They might work in the woods since they aren't very dark, but we'll see.

you fit a 33" spare on with no problem huh...thats my problem right now...I want 32" BFG's but I can't fit the spare under the X...thinking of just tossing it in the back of the X and using some tie straps to keep it down...roof rack or new rear bumper with the swing arm are out of the question as that is a few hundred extra...

Nice looking truck though...and I agree with Stosh...half on that red car would have looked a lot cooler!!

No, not yet anways. I only bought 4 33s, as my current spare is a very capable and brand new 32" AT. The 32 fits fine, so I think I could fit a 33 if I wanted to... but I don't feel the need to spend the cash on a 33" spare right now.

I carry my spare on my roof rack from time to time... keep in mind the weight of the thing. It takes some work to get it up there, certainly not something I enjoy doing. I think keeping the spare in the stock location or in the cargo area is the best option. Plus, having it up top can/does affect the weight distribution and sucks down even more gas mileage.

I think you can buy some type of a trunk mount.... I vaguely remember something about it.
You could also get the whole bumper with the swing out spare tire arm.

You should bring water bottle with ya, if you wet their clothes down it helps the glasses work better.

Thinking of building some sort of trunk mount...we'll see...

Yeah for an extra 800 bucks...lol...not yet...

Some people can get 32" tires under there...but I have a draw-tite hitch and I only have about 1/4" or room with the stock tire...

I know a guy who built a tire carrier that plugged into his trailer hitch. Basically, just 2" stock steel tubing (square) with a small plate at one end to bolt the spare to. Even if you can't weld yourself, it shouldn't be that expensive to make. I'll see if I can track down the pics he posted of it a while back... it's on another board, but if I can find them, I'll post em for ya.

The hitch is home to the bike carrier...but I wonder if I was to get something welded onto the hitch itself...or even easier to bolt onto the holes on the hitch where the chains usually go...hmmm....

So have you two actullay had them? or just bashing, cause your both partialy wrong. They are an excelent rock/trail/sand and i emphasie the rock(which is primairly what i do). They do allright in most kinds of mud if you've got the hp to spin them good, but in deep gumbo mud thier gonna clog up. As far as roadmanners they are 100 times better than you portray them. I've had mine for 18k miles and i'm at about 1/2 tread, so i'm expecting 35-40k miles on my set(33x12.5R15). My friend had a set on his s10 blazer that lasted 45k, and 50k is not uncommon. I've had mine for almost a year(im guessing) and only had them in severe need of balancing twice(my fault) and the were easy to balance. SO on you 2, i call BS. :nope:

HAHhAHAHAHA!!!

Yeah, MTR's SUCK.. I've had the displeasure of owning a set of the over-hyped MTR's... did I mention they suck??? They would not stay balanced, they would scream like a stuck pig on the pavement, they were all over the road when it was wet and they have a 20-25k life expectancy (at best) assuming what the average weekend 4x4'er uses them for.

Oh....here's my 4Runner with the forementioned MTR's...

Um, no, not really. Contrary to popular belief, I tend to research things before I buy, so I knew what I had to do to clear the tires. They juuuust barely rub in the front on the street, slightly when flexed. In the back, they don't rub at all on the street, but they do rub when flexed - not bad, but noticable... only when fully stuffed. I already have 3" of lift, with another 1" coming soon. I could grind to fix the rubbing, but I'd rather lift it a bit more.

Man, id expect them to rub horribly in the rear. IFS wont flex so no problem there, but on my bd 94 runner he lifted it 4-5" and the rear rubbed so bad when flexed he kept the 31x10.50 he had before. We probably do a little more wheeling that you though.

for the extra inch of lift your talking about, if your doing a BL, have fun...they put the body mounts in such hard to get to places, we jsut ditched the idea on my friends. It'll probably get you a bit more clearance though.

NB: i dig the poser pic :) If you have IFS though, your should probably pose with the rear on top.

That's it.

That was the one rock in the whole state of Louisiana...

And... MTR's still suck for all but rocky terrain... So, I got a set of BFG Mud's which are excellent on the road; very quiet, stay balanced, grip ok on wet asphalt... They are grip great in mud and are rock-buggy proven.

Can't say i've seen a rock buggy on bfg's lately. I had trouble with lateral traction w/ bfg's. They always slid sideways on rocks. They do better on wet roads(which mtr's suck at) and deeper mud. I have(we'll had, before my brother rolled it) and big ass dent in my bed from bfg's slipping sideways, but it was also a bit snowy/icy. I imagine you don't get much snow or ice down there, and to bad about THE rock. Rocks are the best!

There are lots of differences between your buddy's 95 and my 96 - it's a whole different generation. Body lifts are pretty easy, though my sliders will be a nussiance. The hardest part will be breaking bolts loose after 8 years of New York winters.

I suspect they will still rub in the back with the extra inch, but not bad, and only when fully stuffed.

Na, not at this point. If I was going to put that kind of money into it, I'd put a crawler in... but that kind of stuff is wasted on IFS, in my opinion. I'll buy an FJ40 before I go that far with my IFS.
