the other day a certain girl showed up armed carrying a bike box with a pretty beaten v10 inside, plus a new 04 v10 frame, didnt take me long to figure out what was in store.
anyhow, the build went rather smooth, the only part that isnt cross compatible from mk1 to mk2 v10 is the rear hub which now is a 12mm instead of 15 (not sure but its bigger).
i transplanted the chainguide and put it in exactly the same position as she had been using on the old bike and it seemed to work. BB is also the same, 128mm isis to holz cranks.
the shock was a dhx5.0, its 8,75/2,75" just like the 5th on the earlier model, this time with a 450lbs steel spring instead of 350lbs ti on the 5th, sadly the shock has some issues so i didnt get to set it up properly, i guess it lost pressure or something like that but at least the way it is now, the bike doesnt pedal all to well.
adjusting the rebound requires the use of a tool and is a bit tricky, the carbon fiber fender has a hole so you can adjust it but its still tricky.
set up with a boxxer and a chris king headset, with a drop crown and set to almost max height, wheelbase is 1135mm.
weight for this medium black frame, with axle, no floater, steel 450lbs spring and dhx5 is exactly 5kg, that 11,11lbs. the supplied hugi fr thruaxle hub is just under 1lb. compare with the 02 med black frame with axle, floater, ti 5th 350lbs at 5,6 kilos means a substantial weight saving.
seat post is still 30.9 thankfully (never understood why they didnt stick to 31,6 when they launched the v10)
head tube is pretty think, it was hard to get the hayes lever through the space between the stanchion and head tube. it wasnt faced nor reamed after paint, bb threads were great though.
housing/hose routing is a lot easier than on the old bike, and you dont need to remove the shock (yipeee) to install the rear brake, im not all to convinced about how the hoses have a big space in the middle where theyre not attached to anything, time will tell about the optimal setup there. the frame has got these "zip tie cradles" all over.
cant remember any other noteworhty things other than that i really liked this frame, never was a fan of the other sc dh bikes but this one seems a lot neater, isnt a pork like the other one and if they fixed the horrendous play issues the previous one had, im sure it will be a great bike.
