I need a new XC race bike and I have 3 in mind. The Giant NRS comp 1, XTC comp 1, or the Fuji Mt Fuji team. I use to race an XC hard tail all the time but I have been out of it for a few years. Im wondering if the NRS would be better choice here on the east coast. but Im also wondering about the long term durability of a carbon hard tail. I know the Giants are nice but I dont know about the Fuji. We just got the new Fuji road bikes in at the shop and they look really nice and they ride nice. I can get all of them as frame sets for about the same price.

The Fuji looks pretty nice. It sounds like you work at a shop, are those the only bikes you can get?

I would go with Giant, for starters. They just increased their warranty from 5 years to Lifetime, which is huge. Then, go full suspension. You'll be very happy with that. NRS is great, and lightweight.

personally owning a giant...i would say giant, they are very reliable and awsome bikes!

Stay the hell away from Fuji. Check the 05 Salsa Scandium/Carbon hardtails, those look KICKASS!
I just got my '05 XTC Comp frame, and hot-damn, it's fast! Feels like my TCR Carbon road bike on the flats, and really damps the trail stutter, feels very much like my SID Carbon...
Anyway, I'll try to get a pic up soon, I love that bike, sooo nice. Everything carbon too.
I just took apart my '04 NRS Carbon too, time to move on to something new, though I'm somewhat second-guessing myself now, as it was my favorite bike I'd ever owned...maybe I will keep it...

coming from a dude who races every weekend(in the season), i would say go full bounce. There is really no real reason that you should get a hardtail over a full suspension bike now-a-days. They have gotten very efficient and lightweight, so the hardtail thing should be no option for you.

Yea I know the NRS would probley be the better choice. I have an Azonic Saber I use for my trail bike. Its 32lb its way to heavy to race on. But full suspension is so much fun. The NRS is a lot like a hard tail eavry one I talk to that has one loves it.motomike said:
My experience is that most ppl that work at shops are stupid - thats why they work at a freakin bike shop (this is adult age ppl not kids and is a generalization). If you plan on racing go for full susp - you will be faster. I ride a hardtail because I enjoy it more but I am sure I was faster on my heavier full susp bike. whatever you get you will be happy with - remember what bike you are on isn't all that important (if your fit is good).

I am 22 and in college and work part time at a shop. As a customer, I would feel more confident talking to an adult about correct PSI for my SPV fork or what should be a comfortable riding position for my new Cannondale Six 13 than speaking to a 15 year old with super baggy pants who can only change tubes and thinks Lycra is for homos. I know you are generalizing and Im generalizing as well. But try to give people who work retail more credit. I know a lot of guys who have bachelors and even masters work part time retail to get hooked up with employee discounts.

How much more does the NRS weigh compared to the xtc. If it is only a matter of a couple of pounds and you think you can get more speed out of it on downhill or rocky sections compared to loosing a little in climbing then I'd say go for the nrs. I still like riding hardtail personally, keeps me honest when picking lines but then again I don't race either.
It's not too much more. The new XTC Comp frame uses the same T-800 carbon as the TCR-Advance frames, so it's much lighter than the carbon used on the older MCM frames, and even that used on the NRS Carbon frames. That being said, for racing, I think I'd prefer the NRS Carbon, it's just an overall faster bike, even on the climbs. Unless they're smooth/fire road climbs, then the new XTC Comp is just like a road bike, in my opinion.GumbaFish said:

Nice indeed. I mean my bike is 22lb ish and that is light enough for me, considering I don't race. But yours has to be a couple of pounds less then that.
